Try going to Personalization - Windows Color and Appearance - Effects - and try changing between "Clear Type" and "Standard" font effects clear type usually helps alot on LCD screens

Im no PC professional, but to me, it sounds like the resolution is spreading the actual pixels out too far on the font. Just for chits and giggles try 1024x768 and see if its ok.
