Help - missing memory

I have a Lenovo 3000 laptop computer with Vista OS. My memory is disappearing. My files take up maybe 10 Gb, yet all 60 Gb are full. Does this have something to do with backup files on the hard drive? If so, I cant find them. Anybody have any advice?
