Hi & Power Supply

Hi Guys,

I am new here so I thought would introduce myself as well as posting my first question.

My name is Matt and I am from Canberra Australia.

My question is this.
I am looking to upgrade my power supply, Is there such a thing as going to high in power? My PC came standard with a 300w but I would like to go 600-650.
I have just put 4GB RAM into it and want to make it run a little better, thinking of a new case and few more fans to.

I am running Vista home premium 32 bit SP1 with core 2 duo processor Intel pentium D935 3.2Ghz

Not sure what else to tell you. I bought the PC from a shop but it was a good buy for a media centre but I am slowly upgrading it in bits and pieces just tomore effective than standard "generic" gear they put in when building them.

Only use the PC for internet, email and media orientated projects

Hi Matt, and welcome to Vista Forums.

No, you cannot go to high with a power supply (PSU). The PSU will only provide what the computer actually uses up to the PSU's rated power wattage output. You only have problems when the computer uses more power than the PSU can provide.

One thing to look for is that the higher wattage PSUs tend to be a little bit larger than the lower wattage ones. You should make sure that it's dimensions will fit in the case. Usually this is not a problem unless you have a mini-tower case.

Unless your running two or more high end graphics card in SLI, I would say 600 to 650 watts would be a good size to have for what you need now and for future additions.

Thanks for the reply. Whilst I have dabbled in IT for a while hardware has never been a big area so I am trying to learn a lot more for my own benefit.

The case I have is from HP, however I am thinking of going to an Antec Nine Hundred simply for the room as I want to add a few more HDD's so space should not be a problem. I am also going to look at a few more fans or the like to keep it cool. A few matesa are all running these cases and they seem to be quie good.

You might take a look at the Antec 1200; it is a full tower case with excellent on-board cooling (Fans). I currently have 8 internal ODD installed and 2 internal HDD and room for more. This case has plenty of room and is a step up from the 900.
