How to activate windows defender?

Please see the attached Print screen for error when i attempt to turn on Defender.

What is difference between Scurity essentials and Defender. Can I run defender with other Anti virus software?

Both Defender and Essentials is a product of MicroSoft for Windows. The new Essentials includes Defender. Defender should be off

If I may jump in and add a bit to this thread.

Windows Defender was included with Vista and Win7 and is available for download for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003.

Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) includes Spyware protection and once installed should disable Windows Defender by default. If it does not it should be disabled manually.

As richc46 states above, it should be turned off. Never have more then one AV, Spyware, Firewall, etc. running in "realtime" for the following reasons:

• False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
• Conflicts: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
• Performance: More that one antivirus will cause your PC to become slow and it may even crash or blue screen.
• Less protection: Two antivirus trying to scan the same file may interfere with the process and allow a malicious file onto the computer without notice to you.

That signature under that humongous neon sign sure looks familiar. Niemiro didn't happen to share that with you did he? I kinda "took it" for my personal use from his signature as well to add to my siggy at yet another forum where I tech. but I don't have it included in my siggy at GeekU. Guess I should, huh?

Wow, it's a small world It's nice to see you over here! Even though I don't really know you over on GeekU, I've only seen some of your posts for help. Yes, he shared it with me; although I really can't wait to get rid of it and finish my training! I've still got UpperClass and the LL's to get through though.
