Not too long ago I upgraded my computer and bought Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit, I have a Comcast Cable Modem Connected to a Microsoft MN-500 wireless router. My computer has always been connected with a wire directly to the router. Ever since I upgraded to this new OS I have had problems. My connection seems to be restarting every so often. The only solution so far that has helped has been disabling the 802.1x authentication security thing. I also turned off my firewall and unistalled my AVG antivirus just in case it might be blocking something. I tried connecting the modem directly to my computer to verify if it is the actual connection or the router, and it worked fine for hours. Then I tried connection my router to another computer (laptop with vista 32bit) and it worked fine connected with the wire. So i've come down to it being my computer. Its not the cable and its not the router or internet. Ive checked if my ports are installed correctly and everything, i'm out of ideas any help? Any solution or suggestion will greatly be appreciated.

If you can get by with a setup where the networking components are connected by wire I would go with that. You said yourself it worked much better. I've never tried wireless because it's in the nature of the thing to be less reliable than something connected with a wire inside your house. (What can I say? I still use PS/2 Mouse with the rubber ball inside and PS/2 wired Keyboard. I'm old school.) :)

I got frustrated and bought a linkys cicso router and it works perfect... i guess that old router isn't too compatible with vista.

I have the same issue you do except I just got a new E105-S1402 and my wireless is a pain. It is also causing the same to the other 3 laptops I have. It is the laptop and I am looking all over to find out why

what router do you have exactly and what OS do you have? and have you made sure your Ethernet port driver is installed correctly?

I have a Netgear Wireless N router, WNR2000. As far as my Ethernet port driver, thats over my head aas to who and where. BUT, I did go on Inel's website and download some drivers on my 5100 Link WiFi and since last night I have not lost the wireless signal.

Well, I spoke to soon. I was doing fine until my wife came home and was on her laptop the same time that I was on mine. She said that she was getting the same problems. Losing conection, droped and stating she is on a unsceured conection.

you have to check if its the internet or the router first, it seems like a router problem. Try this... go to start - control panel. then click 'additional options' on the left you will see 'system maintenance' click that, then on the bottom click 'administrative tools'. (there might be an easier way to reach that.. but oh well im not an expert).Once your in that window click 'services' and press continue. in the services box, theres a tab on the bottom that says 'standard' click that. Now scroll down until you see 'Wired AutoConfig' right click it and press start(assuming you are connected with an ethernet cord).

Now go to the 'network and sharing center' and on the left click 'manage network connections' pick whichever one your using and is on. right clikc it and choose 'properties' and continue, in the next window choose the 'authentication' tab on the top and take off the checkmark where it says 802.1x authentication. and turn off the Wired AutoConfig. And see if that solves your problem. good luck.

I tried that. If fixed my new laptop for about 3 days, my XP laptop was still dropping/lossing signal. Could it be that my new laptop is using Norton Protecton Center and my others are using Trend Micro? Do you think this is a Toshiba issue? Other than going out and replacing all my computers with Apple, what do I do?

Thank you

try disabling all your anti-viruses for a day and see if it affects the connection in any way.

I was thinking about that as well. I contacted Norton today, which is on my new Toshiba and they did a remote and added the current IP address of the other laptops and wireless printer. It fixed everything for an hour, then back to normal. I was thinking of killing my Norton anti-viruse and installing Tren-Micro like the other ones.

Yep thats a good idea too, try that.

If running without the anti-virus stabalizes the network then I'd recommend using Sandboxie for 32 bit OS instead. Rather than interfere with everything you try to do with the computer and look stuff up to see if it's bad, Sandboxie traps the write to the HD and redirects it to a folder. You right click a program and run it sandboxed. Your other apps run normally. When I'm going to browse unfamiliar web sites I start the Sandboxie Control, then click the icon for default browser sandboxed. It shows the Title bar wrapped in hashes like # Firefox # to show it's running in the sandbox.

When I'm done I close the Sandboxie Control kill the Sandboxie service. Sound like a lot but it's a click on that tray icon and I have a command line to stop the service
using sc.exe in \Windows\system32.. Very easy. This way it's not running all the time consuming resources.

Unfortunately it's not supported on 64 bit Windows. :(
