I think I screwed up.

My friend gave me her computer to fix for her. It was in dire need of needing a new windows installation.

So here's what I have and what I did.

Toshiba L300 series laptop.
Recovery and Applications/Drivers (Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP1) Disc 1 and 2

I started by erasing the hard drive. Probably my first mistake.

I then started loading the recovery discs, and after disc 2 ran for a while I got an error message saying that it couldn't find path C:/

What should I do from here?

Use the bootable CD of this program to check what the situation on the disk is. You may try to define an active partition with the same CD program and install to that. I would allocate appr. 30 to 50GBs for this active partition.

Oof, that went right over my head.

I suppose I'll need to burn a dvd of that partition software and boot from that to create a partition?

Then what after that?

Have you got the CD drive as the first boot device in BIOS.

I've been booting from the disk drive, yes.

What does the disk look like when you inspected it with Partition Wizard? Which partitions (and their sizes) are present and which one is active?
