iaStor0 ERROR

Hi:
I am using Vista 64 Home premium.

From the event viewer, I see the following occassionally:

The device, \Device\Ide\iaStor0, did not respond within the timeout period.

The error occurs around the time my system hangs when I try to save some files using the browser (accessing file explorer) or just simply browsing the file explorer. However, this hanging does not always happen with the isStor0 error, isStor0 sometimes pops up in the event viewer without causing any hanging.

What is causing this?? Hardrive??

Regards

Thanks for the reply.

I do Disk Check once every month (last one was about 9 days ago) but still getting iaStor0 error in the event viewer .

Clean Boot (= safe mode??) . you mean I should use the internet and browser in safe mode and see if it hangs??

The device, \Device\Ide\iaStor0, did not respond within the timeout period.

Is iaStor a hardware driver (harddrive ide ?? ) problem?? IDE?? But the harddrive is SATA . What does the above error message mean?? Timeout?? Responding to what???

To do a clean boot-

Run msconfig.exe.

Check the box to hide all Microsoft services in the Services tab. Then check the box to disable all other services.

In the Startup tab, check the box to disable all Startup items.

Reboot.

Restore everything back to normal as soon as you've checked to see if you still have the issue since disabling all startup items will disable anti-virus.

If the issue is gone, then go back to msconfig.exe and restart all services and reboot. If the issue is still gone, run msconfig.exe again and re-enable small numbers of the Startup items until the problem comes back. You'll then know what is causing the problem.

The problem is this does not show up all the time and I do not get system hang when it does show up in the event viewer, but I will try disable some services (usually binary-selection) to see if does show up. I also don't know which service is essential to Vista, if I disable some and it wouldn't start, etc, I will get into more trouble.

Nothing in the Services tab will prevent Windows from starting. This is a standard troubleshooting procedure. You can also do diagnostic boots but I don't know anyone who has.

I will try what you suggest.

I have also tried setting Link State Power Management in PCI Express in the Power Options dialogue.

I also set :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\iaStor\Parameters\port0

and all other port 1 ,2 ,3 .... LPMDSTATE to 0 h (hex)

some suggested this might work, but it didn't in my case.

I just hope this is not because the harddrive is dying (only a few years old).

I use this software to test my hard drive from time to time. It is an easy free download.
CrystalDiskInfo - Software - Crystal Dew World
Before making any downloads, always create a system restore point, just in case of problems.
