i have an old computer with vista and it has a power slider on the back 115v-240v and it is on 115v. i plugged it in and turned it on and bang, smoke. i know it should of been on 240v but i didnt think to check before turning on as i thought it was left in the same state as before but it wasnt. i know the power is totally shot but i would like to know if the hard drive would be damaged or something else as i do not want to take it apart.
thx.

That is an impossible question to answer. In some cases, this has been known to destroy the PSU together with the motherboard and internal peripherals, whereas in others only the PSU was destroyed. You may be lucky, and find that the only thing destroyed is your PSU. Only when you try replacing it with a known good unit will you be able to tell. Be warned though, it is possible that you have also destroyed the board in which case there is a possibility that connecting the board to a different PSU can lead to the destruction of the PSU. By board, I mean the motherboard and also any internal peripherals connected to it.
