Hi John

Looks like a fairly good test, unfortunately it's on an XP box. Do you know if they plan on running one on a Vista system, since the way that many malware works will affect it's viability on Vista systems?

We realize that XP is still prevalent in the market (in spite of my love of Vista!), but Donna hasn't said anything about testing in Vista as of yet - but she *has* seen your reply....

Depends:

• Are you willing to test with and *without* UAC?
• Obviously this would also be a guest OS (I don't see you infecting yourself like Bruce does)
• Would you differentiate between Vista 32bit and Vista 64bit?

1. Yes
2. I often use guest OS to test so I can control it. When I don't have home network yet, I am not worried to infect the host system but since I got one now, I have to be in 'controlled environment' and that is by using VPC or VMware.
3. No access to 64-bit so that's impossible.

the tests are important, since they answer the questions that the viewers have...that is, does this stuff really work?
i say ...if you got the time, go for it

I think it works because there are users who want more than 'words' but 'action'. When you demo to them how a product works with known and not known threats... they find the demo useful (except to users who is loyal to a product or vendor or had experience with a product/vendor).

If you all want it.. I can go for it by using Vista but let us do that on July.
Whether we'll test using malware or just rootkit'ed malware only... depending on the fresh collections that is in circulation.

What I don't want to deal with is the gpcode :deal:

I was also reading some other posts over at CoU, and came across one where you said you need to check on how Eudora is doing over at open source now.
Well, I don't know if you know this but Eudora never died after being taken over and Eudora V7.1.0.9 has been going strong ever since. I wouldn't trade Eudora for all the (U no what & from where), I've used it for well over 10 years now.
Just checking on the Open source project, it seems that Eudora 8.0.0b3 is out, which includes the Penelope extension. I'll have to snag that and see how it's coming along but I wouldn't be at all upset if I stuck with 7.1.0.9 either, it still does everything I need it to and does it beautifully too!!

I'm gonna be registering over at CoU right away too, I've seen numerous people I know from my other Security sites that are regular posters over there, so looks like a great site.

Just an FYI John...

I checked out Eudora 8.0.0b3 and almost immediately went back to 7.1.0.9...I think I like the older version much better myself. Probably because I'm so used to using it the way it is, but I also just tried doing my regular things in the new V8 and they couldn't be done in this new version. And since V7 works perfectly with Vista 64bit, I'm going to stay with this version now.
I haven't allowed Outlook Xpress or Outlook to start on any of my machines for so long now that I've completely forgotten what they even Look like...let alone how flaky and vulnerable they are compared to Eudora...

Lol - I got tired of buying Eudora for the advanced features, and tried Thunderbird when it first went gold with 1.0 - and never looked back. I still love Eudora, but Thunderbird is cheaper :P

I did try Eudora 8 twice - and quickly went back to Tb as well - it is just too limited for now.

I am sticking with TB, now using ver 3 alpha - it suits my needs and does what I want it to with all 14 email addresses I have.

As for CoU - yeah, it is a great site, and we are working on the Junior level courses for the CoUniversity right now - be looking for those soon.

Freshman and Sophomore courses are a bit dated, and we wanted to overhaul all of them, but that will take time - so we're holding off until we have the Junior and Senior level courses up and running and then will overhaul the Freshman and Sophomore level courses - as one might expect, the older courses are also very easy to learn, and understand, as they were targeted toward the novitiate.

It is hard to dump something that you're so comfortable with using isn't it...
I never had any need for the few options that the Paid Eudora had over the Sponsored mode, and the (very few) ads were just a small box in the lower left corner that you never noticed anymore after a week anyway. Totally unobtrusive with only 5 or so ads from reputable companies and they were so small that I never thought twice about them.
When Eudora went open source that tiny box just became a Eudora symbol...I think it took me a month to actually realize that there was nothing happening down there anymore...LOL! But Sponsored mode has every feature I could ever need really, so it's been perfect for me for over 10 years now, I really wouldn't ever use anything else now, it's just too good and you know why I feel like that don't you..

That's good about CoU also, I find that security sites that actually "Teach" and certify users for things are always the best you can find for that purpose. I've taught at HijackThis forums, TomCoyote.org (now WhatTheTech), Besttechie.net and Spywareinfo.com, teaching people the intricacies of the HJT logs. Many of them coming in thought that they knew pretty much everything about HJT logs, but once they got into it they quickly realized just how little they actually knew and realized that the teaching sites were an important step in their security background.
I definitely want to spend some time at CoU but I have 3 sites I Admin and 4 others I'm senior Mod at, plus a bunch of other sites I hang my hat in now & then, so I have to make some time soon. Anyone know a good Time Machine maker?
