I ditched my paid for KIS 2011 in favour of MSE, mainly because it was causing random BSOD.

Is it just me, or does MSE not do automatic virus updates?

Every now and then I will check for a Windows Update, only to find MSE definitions that need updating.

I have set MSE to do a daily scan. And to check for updates before running a scan.

I have set my Critical Updates and patches etc. to check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them.

I have always set my system to do this, because I hate being in the middle of doing something and the popup window "restart now or later" comes up.

I have MSE, it will update automatically
It will come via the windows live update, or through MSE itself.
Windows update checks for updates once a day. If there is a MSE update, it will be updated the next time that Update checks.

Or you can do what I do....
First thing after booting up is go to MSE and update immediately.
I do a weekly quick scan along with MBAM quick scan.
It's part of my daily and weekly house keeping that has kept me safe and sound.

There is actually a very specific reason. Say that you have MSE set to auto-install updates at 14:00 every day. Say that Microsoft happen to release an update at 8:00, and you happen to check Windows Update at 10:00.

The MSE definition updates will be shown, but are marked as optional because if ignored they will be installed within 24 hours (at 14:00 in this example)

I know they are a bit disconcerting, I know how you feel, but they will auto-install given time.

I dont think Niemiro means that you can set when it happens. The time given is for an example. If MSE updates at 14:00 hours (it will do so every 24 hours at that time).
This is not a problem. A virus may be out there and it may be weeks before MS adds it to the definitions. So you are unprotected for a week or maybe more, a few more hours will not make a difference.

Open MSE (right click on Tray icon > Open) > Settings tab > Scheduled Scan selected from left hand pane > Set the "Scheduled scan" time, and tick the "Check for the latest..." checkboxes

My aplogizes, yes you can set the scan time and then it will update at that time.
I was thinking in terms of, that time is set and it will be updated once every 24 hours.
The scan is only once a week.

I had no idea when writing as to whether I could set the time or not. A bit of fiddling, and that was the best I could find. It doesn't really matter when, as you said, though.
