Missing the AudioEndpointBuilder file

I am getting this message when I try to play audio files on a Dell Dimension C521 installed with Windows Vista Home Basic 32BIT -
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly."
Tracking a little through the problem, I find that I also cannot start my Windows Audio Service. The reason for that appears to be because it is dependent on "AudioEndPointBuilder" also being up and running, which it is not. When I try to start this file, I then get the following -
"Error 0x80070002: The system cannot find the file specified."
Running a general search query for the file on my C: drive comes back with no results either.

Can anyone help please?

Thanks a lot!

I'm having the same issues (with the AudioEndpointBuilder service not being able to start, citing the same error message)... anyone find a solution for this?
