Hi,

Please can someone answer the following questions.

MRT.EXE was last modified on the 9 March, 2011.

Surely for this tool to be effective it must updated daily?

Can anyone advise.

In addition, I note that this file is in system32, why not system? Can anyone tell the difference between the two directories?

Finally, I searched for mrt.exe in 'Windows Explorer'. This search covered 'everywhere', yet it did not find this programme. Can anyone suggest how I can adjust my searches to find anything on my pc

Thanks

A

Hi,

Thanks for responding, and for the links.

I have the program on my machine, but I have never noticed the window that is supposed to appear after it has run. Is this normal?

Is mrt.exe the programme that is used by IE9 to check documents that are downloaded or opened. If so, again, I have never noticed a window after the scan.

Best wishes.

Hi,
I will try & answer your questions the best I can.
As you are aware it is a relatively new, excellent introduction from microsoft, therefore users are only becoming aware of its inclusion and benefits to security.
As included in the tutorial, if I've got this right, it runs in the background similar to other security software, the only time that you see balloon or notification is when you have a problem and it detects 'nasties' on your computer.

Also note in this that you have to be logged on as Administrator.
Your next Q:- programme that is used by IE9......etc., I personally don't know the answer.
Someone else on the forum may be in receipt of that knowledge, but not I, sorry.
Except to say that maybe that programme also runs unnoticed & notification is given when a problem, or pages are not downloaded in the first place because of a problem.
I guess if you had or want to see proof of everything the computer is doing on your behalf, it would be an awfull lot of info to read before you could get on the web !!
Hope these may answer some of your questions.

Thanks for responding, and for the helpful advice.

You mention in answer to my first question that I must be logged in as Administrator.

I login to Vista using my password, I assume that I am logged in as an Administrator.

Or do you men that I must run mrt.exe as Administrator.

Best wishes.

Logging in with password will be logging you IN as administrator.
Assuming you personally set up the computer & password?
Yes, if there is a problem & MRT finds some 'nasties', notification will be given to those of administrator status only.
