Network icon

While this does not represent a problem, I am just curious. Don't rightly know when it started but I have noticed that on my PC which runs Vista Home Premium and an internet connection through a DSL modem and router, the connection icon in the task bar will keep the red x for about 2 minutes after the desktop screen comes up although I do have an internet connection because I can browse in IE8 and Firefox. Used to show a connection instantly; now I only get a blank box when I click on the icon while it has the red x. My laptop running with the same connection shows the icon as connected instantly so it must be something with my PC OS. Don't recall ever having changed anything which might cause this other than regular updates.

Did as you asked, no help, still the same. What really gets me is that can't even access the Network and Sharing Center as long as the red x is shown.

Would not know what date to pick for a restore point. Just did one a few weeks back, had to use the install cd because twice the NWS web page locked hopelessly down where I could not even get into safe mode (blinking dash upper left corner), took forever! Maybe my present problem started back then.

Guess I'll give up on this one. As I said it's not really a problem just curiosity over what might have brought on the change.

True to my signature I just could not leave this one alone and it seems I found the solution in an old post in this forum by "whocares" with a quote from Shawn. I did have "Network Connections" set to Manual, changed it to Started and Automatic and every thing's the way it should be. Now, if I only could figure out why why the network icon behaves normally on my laptop with the setting on Manual. LOL!
