I also lost the ability to restore using the dell factory image. At boot I can access it by pressing F8, then it brings me to a screen where it shows a user other. Nothing I enter can access it.

Hi Venom.

Its a little unclear what your talking about, by boot-up sound, do you have a little beep, or the 'welcome' type of music upon login.

What could you have done to remove it?

Nothing, I don't really use my PC much anymore. Its when you get to the windows logo screen there was so music that would chime. Now nothing. I did pull a Trojan off yesterday.

Hm, well perhaps a virus isn't the point at fault here.

Try going to your control panel and look for anything that has to do with start-up sound. Generally its in the Personalization section.

Is the startup sound the only issue you have with sound?

Try going to a start => run line, type in

sfc /scannow

and clicking OK.

Since sound seems OK except for the system ones the system file checker may be able to locate and replace a bad or missing file and get you back in business.

Otherwise, system start-up repair from your vista installation disk should fix this, but prepared to reinstall the updates since SP2

I ran the SFC already with no luck. And no disks other than drivers came with. I did fine in my recovery partition there is application that sets it back to factory specs. After I transfer all my pics to a different HD I'm going to try that. Its odd because I have used that before but I accessed it at boot by pressing F8. Now I can't get to that. It just sends me to a user page called other.
