Solved NVIDIA Changing Desktop Icons Position

meltie

Power User
All,

Can someone please help me with this? Here's some history.

BTW - My system is Vista Home Premium 64-bit

NVIDIA was randomly changing the placement of my desktop icons. UNTIL, I updated the drivers to 191.07. After that, the desktop stabilized and I didn't have an issue.

NOTE: My version of NVIDIA is 8500 GT/9200 (not sure why it has two?)

I just updated the drivers today to 197.13 and sure enough . . . during installation, it took my desktop icons, rearranged them, and shoved them all to the left. I cannot tell you how irritating this is to me.

I have read some of the other threads and the general concensus then, was that there is no way to lock the desktop.

Has anyone found a way to either lock the desktop or resolve this issue? I assume I'm not alone in this.

Course the "easy" fix would be to just restore back to the earlier drivers, but . . . I'm thinking that it's really best to have the most up-to-date ones - yes??

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Meltie

most likey its a undocumented bug in the nvidia install and vista reset the desktop to its default settings.
you could try ultramon which does have a save position option for icons and then you save your desktop as a profile. also remember to untick the auto arrange option b right clicking the desktop then view

Heyy,
This is going to sound stupid, but try it if you haven't already.
Minimise all your windows so you can see all your desktop, right click and go to view, then go to auto-arrange icons and click it.

Ill attach a pic of what i mean..

Daniel :D

Auto Arrange will help only a little, however i know the frustration but unfortunately there really isn't a lot you can do about it
The reason it does this during driver install is that sreen resolution reverts back to its default windows setting of 800x600 and since the layout of your icons exceeds this it is forced to rearrange them to fit into the 800x600 space

Now i know of some tips that can help you but its not 100% fool proof unless you can contain all your icons in that 800x600 space

ok we will start by the simply method of holding down CTRL and scrolling with your middle mouse button until you are happy with the icon resizing(size)
once your happy with the icon size then go to:
Control Panel \ Ease of Access Center \ Make the computer easier to see then scroll down to fine tune display effects

Appearance settings should open, choose Advanced... In the 1st drop down box will say desktop open the tab and go to Icon spacing (horizontal) & (vertical) next to that will be a box for adjusting the size (i set mine to 34 but you can go smaller if you adjust the font size too)
be sure to ok \ apply\ ok to finalizes settings

Okay.

I have the auto arrange button "unticked". I have "Classic Icons" and "Show Desktop" selected.

What is Ultramon?

Before I hit the Auto Arrange, I have a question: won't that take my icons and arrange them the way the system wants them? vs how I want them? I'm asking first because I just finished placing them back where "I" want them and if it changes them again I'm going to have to walk away for a bit while I have total meltdown LOL

Thanks

Meltie

Guys,

I found the fix and it works!! It was here on the Forum all along, just didn't see it before.

Below is the excerpt with both original question and answer from Gary. The only thing you need to do if you have a 64-bit like I do, is to download the "second" file which says for 64-bit systems.

Thanks for your help.

Meltie
