NVIDIA control panel application

When I do a right mouse click on my display (to look at my screen settings) I get the following error message:

NVIDIA control panel application, 3.3.532.01 has stopped working

My system:
OS Name: Microsoft® Windows Vista Home Premium (32bit)
Version: 6.0.6002 Service Pack 2 Build 6002

How can I fix this problem?
I have attached a image of the error that I see.

I would start with the graphics driver
Go to device manager, make sure that the graphics driver is up to date and that no yellow markers are anywhere to be seen.
Make sure the the tree, in the left panel, is not open anywhere and open tree indicates a problem in that area.

Sounds like a corruption of sort with the nvidia shell extension.

Best thing to do is grab the most recent driver for your card off the nvidia site.

Completely uninstall the old driver (physx, 3dvision etc), reboot and run the new ones.

For some strange reason recently most of my programs have been crashing out, and I found out it was caused by DEP stopping programs from crashing my computer, eg/ fallout 3, safari, 3connect application. all have a similar crash window as VIRSTO, maybe you can try the DEP fix for your application.

Simply right click computer and select properties, click on advanced system settings on the left and click on performance settings, a new window should open with tabs, click on "Data Execution Prevention" tab and click add, now select the program that is crashing which should be located in C:/Programs Files/NVIDIA corporation/Control Panel Client... select "nvcplui.exe" and it should add it to the list you saw before, click apply and try again with opening the control panel now :-)

You can try using driver cleaner reboot, install new driver via safe mode. Good luck!
