Solved Onboard video going?

Have an HP s3700y, 4GB Memory, AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+ and integrated GeForce 6150SE nForce 430.

Last week my monitor went to diagonal lines while using Word. Everything stopped (mouse, audio, keyboard, etc.). Restarted manually and worked for 15 min then the same thing happened except this time the PSU was dead. Just replaced that and all was well until 30 minutes ago when the monitor displayed the following:

This is now occurring with greater frequency and am clueless if it's the onboard video or what.

Any and all suggestions welcome.

Further info: Left the display and HD running all night with no problems. Just now I was watching a YouTube video and the same as above occurred. Ran the HP Diagnostics Video Stress Test and it "crashed" to the same screen and unresponsiveness.

You could download the Microsoft Fix It and run the Hardware and Devices check to see if it finds the issue.

Saddly Mark, youre 98% most likely correct. Most likely due to heat degradation. Those slimlines aren't very cool and after 5yrs heat takes its toll on things.

AS LONG AS YOU DON"T WANT ANYTHING KILLER< YOU CAN probably pick up a card for under $40.

Yes, I think I've pretty much resolved myself to disabling the onboard video and installing a mini-card. Things were "normal for four days, then began the same freezing yesterday.

Haven't purchased it yet. The card you recommend is a 64-bit card but in checking SIW the available slot is 32-bit. Any problems you foresee? Also, I noticed this card is fanless. Would a card w/fan be better due to the inherent heat problem (had to buy a new PSU 2 weeks ago)?

The 64/32 bit thing isn't realy got much to do with windows, so no, it'll be just fine. As long as it's pci-e it will work.

If youre fiding you are too hot, then yes a active cooler is probabl smart.

The biggest concern will be the psu size, What psu do you have? I think the low end nvidias are you only true option.

I thought this was sound advice so I hooked up the monitor to the laptop. Put it throught every stress test I could think of then ran YouTube and The Gimp simultaneously and never had one crash.

So far so good and hope the fan can keep temps down enough so that it won't crash again.


Any opinions on the best software to check hardware and put thru stress tests?

For gpu's, furmark is the best, straight up gpu testing.
LinX or Intel Burn Test is the best cpu test.

3dmarkis a good blended, gpu, cpu test.
