Partition Problems

After advice as part of my clean re-install I want to partition up the 2 HDD (identical 250GB)
Aiming to set a 50GB partition on each drive for 'active OS' and use other for backup of this for easy restore.

I tried following the VISTA partition tool.
For drive 0 it comse up in the console as:
Total size before shrink 238146
Size of available shrink space 114650
Enter the ammount of sapce to shrink 1145650
Total size after shrink 123766

I proceed it and it resulted in 120.87GB and 119.6GB

I cannot make primary partition smaller or new partition larger ?

I have turned off paging, deleted restore & shadow files, defraged ... no difference.
I even tried it on the empty 2nd HDD(drive 1) ... this also will not partition smaller than
How can I make this partition 'larger' and thus the primary partition 50GB
having just done a 3rd clean install this week - I hope I don't have to start again.

A secondary Q ... how do I delete the partitions created .. no 'delete' option when I right click on drive.

I'll put things on hold pending help :(

Re: Partitiona Problems

Unallocated space is just space - it is not a partition - therefore you cannot delete it.

Looks as if there are sytem files on the drive preventing windows from shrinking any further.

You would need a 3rd party partition manager to do that.

Free Download Partition Wizard

Assuming there is free space on the partition you wish to shrink:

You can shrink D from the left while you are booted into C.

If you want to shrink C - don't try it from within windows - use the PW boot disc:

TURN OFF PAGING FILE

1. Open Control Panel -> System and Maintenance -> System
2. In the left “Tasks”, click on Advanced System Settings.
3. You should come to “Advanced” tab. In “Performance” section, click on Settings button.
4. Click on Advanced tab.
5. In the “Virtual Memory” section, click on Change button.
6. Select "C:" or your Vista drive and click "No paging file", then "Set", then "OK"

Then try shrinking.

Reactivate the same way. For reactivating hibernation do:
powercfg -H on
