Password virus

I would really appreciate some help!!!
I bought my laptop second hand 2 years ago, I have never had to sign into windows vista before or seen another user on it. .I now have a blank user and a password on my user which I cannot get past. .My friend has burnt all sorts of decoding/deleting/changing passwords software onto disc yet none of them will work. .He said the screen says there is a virus, safe mode still just takes me straight to the windows vista user to enter the password and I am going crazy here. .Losing what I have on my hard drive is absolutely my last option, can anybody help pleeeease??? My computer is made by Dell

Welcome to the Forum,
If all else fails a factory restoration would be advisable. That merely means that you will go back to day one. All your stuff will be lost, you need to update again etc. We can save your stuff first via Ubuntu. Post if interested. We need computer make and model if you want to make this move.

Just to be clear because I'm not good with computers; 1-can I install ubuntu without accessing my desktop? 2-if I can, will I be able to save the 200gb on my hard drive? Thanks

I would recomend you try using the USB anti-virus BEFORE trying the complete restore. Using ubuntu will allow you to access all your files without logging into windows. You can then copy those files to an external drive and perform the clean install. However, if you use the USB anti-virus and it removes the virus, no clean install is really necessary.

Great info thank you, I'm sure I will be asking more questions when I have access to a computer lol I really appreciate it, everyone else I know has ran out of ideas

Ask as many questions as you feel necassary, thats what we are here for. As many of us here say "There are no dumb questions, just the people who do not ask them."

EDIT - Just found something you must make sure you do and that's update the rescue disk when you install it if you can. The guide is located here: How to update anti-virus database of Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10?. Ignore the proxy server steps if you don't use a proxy server to connect to the internet. If your not sure if you do, you probably don't

Agreed.
My suggestion is a last resort, but offers hope that this can be solved.
