hi -

i have a Dell poweredge server with Vista x64 installed. Unfortunately, it doesn't include PCI-e x16. It has 2 x4 slots with x8 connectors. :(

What kind of graphics card can I use with this system?

thanks

specs:
DELL PowerEdge SC1430, 2 x Quad Core Intel Xeon CPUs 1.6Ghz, 4 GB RAM 667 Mhz , 750 PSU, Intel 5000V, Vista Ultimate x64

Almost same setup as yours and have been wondering the same thing. Have just ordered my rig and the Windows Vista operating system hasn't arrived yet, but saw in the computer specs that there were two 4 lane slots with 8 lane connectors. I found an AJA Krona card that fits 8 slot connectors but the price was pretty prohibitive (for me, anyway). I think in time there will be more cards that will work, since I read somewhere that most x16 cards only utilize about 4 lanes, but this could be bogus. If I find out more will post it here. hope you will do the same. Have heard of a x1 card that would work, but may not help me much because I will be crunching large file video. Hope this helps

Update: Saw a post leading to a Dell Forum Post that told of a PCIe x8 connector that adapts to x16 card. Raises the card just a bit but apparently it works with many cards. Can't find the post again... that's what I'm doing back here... retracing my surf-steps. This will probably be the route I will take if I ever find the link to the adapter again.

Depend on the performance you want. It may be better to upgrade. I know you may not want to do this but it can be alot cheaper that you think. Give me your specs in a PM or post it and I will be able to help you. P.S. also post you buget.
