PDF Reader

Hi,

I use Vista 32 bit and IE 8

At present, I use Adobe's Acrobat Reader ver 7, which needs updating.

The file is very large.

I have read of pdf xchange and
Foxit.

Which of these would work best with my system?

Include Adobe's reader if you think that it is the best.

Ps. If changing from Adobe, I assume that all I need do is uninstall Adobe Reader using Programs and Features. I assume that I should leave the Adobe directory in PF. I do have Adobe Flash Player installed.

Hi,

Do you have any computer magazines (New ones) they usually have Adobe Acrobat reader on them! Flash player is different & will remain on your system & therefore the adobe folder will stay in the PF.

What system updates do you do?

If you upgrade to Adobe v9.4 you will need to update most of the Windows system fles too as this will/ could cause compatibilty issues with Windows.

Remember that most/ all software houses expect you to keep the windows system updated too.

Welcome to Vista Forums.

You will get many different opinions on which is better - I know several who prefer Foxit. But I've always used Adobe Reader and never had any problems with it (installing upgrades or using it with IE and Office and separately) so that's what I recommend.

The file may be very large, but remember that it will be updating the version you have so many of the files will be simply replaced though there may be some new ones and some may even be deleted - your system isn't going to increase by as much space as the Adobe file size because you are updating.

Pay attention to what Lottie said about Windows Updates - before you do this make sure those are up-to-date so you don't run into any problems because Vista is not updated to the point where it can work with this version of Adobe Reader. Plus you should keep you Windows Updates up-to-date anyway for security and other reasons.

Make sure you select the appropriate reader for your system (and, if I recall correctly, during installation be sure to uncheck the google toolbar option if that still is presented). Choose to save it to your desktop and when done right click on it and click Run as Administrator. This increases the chances everything will go smoothly.

Thanks for responding.

Windows Update tells me that no important updates are available.

Can I assume that all the most important Vista files are up to date?

I get the impression that you both recommend staying with Adobe's Reader.

I am not sure how to update version 7 of the Reader that I have on my machine, but I will do some reading.

If Windows Update says you're current, then you're up-to-date and fine.

You do not need to uninstall your current Adobe Reader unless prompted to do so by the installation software for the new reader.

You may need to temporarily disable your security software for the download (then re-enable it as soon as the download is complete). Get it from here: Adobe - Adobe Reader download - All versions. Choose to save it to your desktop and when done right click on it and click Run as Administrator. This increases the chances everything will go smoothly. If I recall correctly, during installation be sure to uncheck the google toolbar option if that still is presented (EDIT: when installing Adobe Reader X, there was no option for a google toolbar - so that apparently has been removed.)

Look here for the new reader Adobe reader X: -

Adobe - Adobe Reader download - All versions
(please untick the Google Tool bar if you do not want it)

You will need to un-install reader 7 manually once the Adobe Reader X is installed, I believe it does not remove previously installed versions.

You can do this through: -

Control panel
Programs & features.

I just upgraded to Adobe X and then checked Programs and Features and there were no other versions of Adobe Reader installed on the system (and I had Adobe Reader 9 previously installed) - so I believe the upgrade removed the prior version automatically. However, to be sure, I suppose it doesn't hurt to check to make sure the same is true for you.
