please help

My hard drive crashed on my Gateway FX6800-01e and I got a new one to replace it. I have run the recovery disk and windows is installed however when I try to update I get the message. I can't run windows update because service is not active. But when I look my service is active. I have searched high and low and have event tried fix it from microsoft support. Fix it will not install. I am at a loss and out of money I need help please.

Are you able to install any programs?

If you go to control panel\administrative tools\services, find the Windows Updater and click on it. Try to restart it even if it's shown as started. does that work?

Windows update refused to work and after trying what I felt was everything one of our IT friends suggested updating my chip set drives via the intel site. I figured it wouldn't hurt and it fixed the problem.

I wonder what the drivers had to do with this?

It's possible that the old BIOS couldn't handle the new hard drive and needed to be updated in order for it to work.

I understand now. You didn't mention that you updated the BIOS.

When he said "chipset" I interpreted that as a BIOS update that affects the onboard HDC (hard drive controller).

There are several chipsets that you can install drivers for on the motherboard such as the onboard graphics and sound. That's what I thought he was referring to. We're on the same page now.
