Hi all, here is the story so far:

i was using sony vaio, VGN-FE48G/H, vista home premium

Processor: intel® Core™2 CPU T7200 @2.00GHZ
memory (RAM): 1022MB
Vista home premiuum 32-bit Operating system
i ran a TuneUp Utilities 2007 scan and it stated :
" your computer has a 64bit processer, but your current windows version only
uses 32 of the available 64bits. you should consider upgrading to a 64bit
version of your operating system to benefit from iproved security and better
system performance"

so i set out to buy Vista Ultimate 64bit i installed a clean version then i went to downloading the
nvidia fom http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x64_158.24.html

now i'm instaling the updates but, i have thes issues:
  1. my built in camera doesn't work(lookin 4 a solution)
  2. My blutouth doesn't work too
  3. Lan settings disapeared
  4. other isuues didn't quit check

Hi Younes,

Welcome. My camera did the same thing. I ended up having to use 64-bit XP drivers for it. To install, I had to run the driver setup program in compatibility mode for XP (sp2). You'll need to check the other devices websites for Vista 64-bit (or XP 64-bit if they don't have Vista) drivers.

Hope this helps some,
Shawn

Basically it was rather irresponsible of TuneUp Utilities 2007 to give you the advice to update to 64-bit. In *theory* (and on *nix boxes mostly) 64-bit gives improved performance and better security, but 64-bit Windows is still rather new and there is very little support for it. Most companies who produce cameras, scanners, phones etc do not write 64-bit software for their products and Windows has extremely minimal support built in.

I'm considering switching back because allthough 64-bit should be faster, because of lack of driver support it doesn't even begin to compare with my 32-bit XP install (or 32-bit Vista for that matter).

There is really no reason for you to install the 64-bit version of Vista util/unless:
  • you install and need to access more than 4 GB of RAM in your laptop
  • -and/or -
  • you just feel like playing around with the 64-bit version of Vista (but it looks the same as the 32-bit version with slightly less driver support).

X64 OK So Far

Vista x64 makes sense when you are starting out with a new computer having components that all have 64bit drivers. This pretty much means that you will have to build it yourself or purchase a very specialized system.

I built a system with all new, very recent components all of which had 64bit drivers. Only my Microsoft keyboard, of all things, does not fully work. There are no devices on my system for which digitally signed, 64bit drivers were not available, and everything works well enough. (I do still have a nagging crash problem that may be due to memory sticks with bad spots.)

Installing Vista X64 on an existing machine with older components is almost certain to lead to grief. Just having a 64bit CPU is not enough.

Kind regards,
Opus

I can honestly say ive had no problems with 64 bit Vista so far and have been using it for about 2 weeks, the only thing i can find is that some drivers and applications take a looooong time to install which is wierd.. apart from that its running great for me..

I have a gigabyte K8nf9
AMD 64 3000 cpu
3gb DDR
Geforce 7900
2 x WD 120gb Serial ata
1 x Seagate 160gb Serial ata

Ive been playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. mainly and also some BF2142 and UT2004 to tide me over until UT3 appears.. its all running great and i couldnt be happier :)

One small thing im dissapointed with is no Flash support for 64 bit Iexplore, hopefully its not too far away..
