(Solved) Populating the Start Button Programs Field

I recently reloaded Vista 7 on my laptop using media from the laptop's manufacturer. Later I added myself as a user. When I click the Start button, the field that appears above the "Programs" button is entirely empty. If I log in as a different user, that field is populated with various programs.

How can I populate that field?

You posted in the Vista forum. Right click on the Start button and select Properties. In the Start Menu tab, make the appropriate selection in the Privacy section. I don't have my Win 7 system up right now but I think the procedure is the same as in Vista.

This reminds me of your 7-year-old thread Start Menu "Recent Items" Suddenly Missing. When a new user account is first created, there won't be any recent items because the new user hasn't used any programs yet. I would suggest clicking All Programs at the bottom of the Start menu instead.
Edit: You can right-click an item and select Pin to Start Menu, which will prevent it from disappearing if it hasn't been used recently.

This Vista SP1 system is offline, correct?

Upon a fresh install all that's there are programs that M$ thinks that you might want to use. Right click on the start menu button. Select properties. Check the box store and display recently opened programs in the start menu.

When I wrote "Vista 7" in my starting post I should have written "Windows 7".

Yes. It looks like I need to drag-n-drop whatever programs I need to the Start icon. I just found Wordpad.exe, opened it and created a test file, and then closed it. Wordpad now appears in the Start menu

Thank you for your help. (BTW the computer uses Windows 7 64-bit)

If you set the privacy setting to show a list of programs you recently opened, you shouldn't need to drag and drop anything.

For some reason, I have an e-mail notification that you can't find the privacy settings but I can't see your response here. Maybe you deleted it but-

If you right click on the Start button and select Properties, select the Start Menu tab. There are two privacy options you can select. The second one is the one you want but you can select both.
