Printer problem

Hi, I am a first-timer here. Had a friend help me set up a home network over the weekend. 3 desktops, 2 printers. All was well yesterday. Today, low and behold, one of the desktops cannot see the printer that is directly connected to it! I re-added the printer, and now it shows up as a choice, but print jobs are not successful... "error" message every time. I re-installed the driver (Vista) - no good. I deleted the printer, unplugged it from the computer, and rebooted, then plugged the printer back in (USB), I expected to get the "found new hardware" popup. Nope. Nothing. What gives? Any suggestions welcome. Thanks very much.
