Problem with Sound, need help!

The other day I was fiddling around with my sound settings, and as a result my sound stopped working. Could someone please help. I get this error message:

Welcome to the forum.

You might try reinstalling the audio driver to see if that will clear up the error.

What type of sound card are we talking here?

Looks like a Realtek HD to me.

I'll let you guys take this one, then. I prefer not to fight with onboard audio when it starts causing problems. It usually doesn't end well, if the simple solutions don't work.

Thanks guys, I really wasn't sure if I was going to get a response. I think I would like to try and reinstall the driver like Shawn suggested. Problem is, I don't know how to do this. I get as far as going into the device manager menu, select sound Realtek High Definition Audio, and that is it. Another menu pops up when I select this and it says: Driver Details, Update Driver, Roll Back Driver, Disable, and Uninstall. Is this where I need to be? Please walk me through reinstalling the driver. Thanks so much.

You can just download the driver again and reinstall it that way.

Thanks Shawn, I downloaded the file but I am not sure what to do with it. I am really illiterate, sorry. It downloaded into a file called Vista_R180, not sure what to do with it next. Thanks for the help.

That depends on if it is the ZIP or EXE that you downloaded.

If it is the EXE, then simply double click on it to install it.


If it is the ZIP, then double click on it and Extract all the files to the same location as the ZIP. Now, just simply double click on the Setup file to install.


Make sure you install either one twice. First time removes the old driver, and the second time actually installs the driver. You will need to restart the computer after each install.
