Problems with desktop

I run Windows Vista 32-bit Home Edition Premium. I recently encountered some spyware ( Internet Security 2010) and possibly some viruses. In addition to disabling my task manager feature, they deleted my Mal-Byte's AntiMalware program and prevented me from re-installing it. As I no longer had access to an adequate virus removal program, I decided to use the manual removal instructions that I found on [url-http://www.2-spyware.com/remove-internet-security-2010.html]this[/url] website. One of the steps was to delete the registry settings installed by the viruses/spyware. So, as the site suggested, I ran the "regedit" command. Immediately after I clicked "run," a blue screen appeared. I had encountered this a few times already while dealing with this infection, so I simply waited for my PC to restart and logged back into my account. After logging into my account, however, I noticed that there was no desktop; there was only a black screen. I could see and move my cursor, and I could bring up the cntrl+alt+delete menu (minus the task manager, as I said earlier), yet nothing on the desktop would appear. I tried starting it in safe mode, but that did not solve anything. To make it worse, I never remembered to set a restore point, so I can't use that. Does anyone have suggestions as to what I can do? I thought about using the restore disk that came with my computer, but I'd rather not format my harddrive unless I absolutely have to.

You said: "I never remembered to set a restore point, so I can't use that". But vista OS set restore points automatically when you install or uninstall any software, did you check it? And if system restore didn't work i'm afraid you have to perform a system recovery.
Good luck.
