Many thanks to those who offered suggestions for resolving my dilemma.

The problem turned out to be the method you use for activating the individual apps in MSOffice 2010. It seems that the default position is "off". At least, that appears to be the case. So far MSO 2010 is installed with only the Word app activated. Acrobat X is installed as well. So far I can maintain my files in the original format and print them in that format.

Man-Oh-Man: Acrobat and MSO are tussling over which format will be dominant, but if you make sure which switches you're activating, you can keep things under control.
