Recycling

Whilst I know that recycling is important, and I have no problem with it apart from the fact that our back garden has got three wheelie bins and we now know that we are going to get a fourth!! and our nice garden is starting to look more and more like a car park, only with bins so really a bin park!! :(

Not only that but I cannot get to grips with what goes where, I mean there's the kitchen bin, then outside a green, brown and blue bin, each time I have stuff to throw out I have to spend ages sorting out what goes where, it becomes a real pain, but I know it has to be done........wish there was an easier solution......but the councils keep sending us more bins........is this really the answer?

Then you have the elderly who may well struggle more than anyone to get it right, and there have been stories and reports of people getting fined or worse for putting rubbish in the wrong bins.......soon if not already neighbours that don't get along could put their own rubbish into their neighbours bins and get them into trouble........things are getting worse rather than better

Just thought I would share my frustration

Jekyll and Hyde ;)

You're lucky you get bins, here we just have black plastic bags for normal and orange plastic bags for recycle things.
We were given compost bins so we could put our peelings and egg shells and that sort of thing in to compost down.

The orange bags take cans, cardboard, paper and plastic bottles plus all that junk mail and catalogues. Glass bottles either have to go in the black bags or taken to a skip site which for me is a few miles away. I do know that if you put the wrong thing in an orange bag it's thrown out and taken by the normal refuse collection lorry and not the recycle lorry.

The only problem with plastic bags is that they are easily torn, especially by animals or even the seagulls around here :(

what about calling your local council and keep asking them for more wheelie bins put padlocks on them to keep neighbours out, then sell them on Ebay, I'm sure you would get some good offers. with the money you make you can donate some of it to some good charities. everybody is a winner then.

We only have the black/pink sacks and a couple of weeks ago our local council sent us an exciting leaflet (that went into the pink bag by the way) telling us we are going to be getting blue tubs for our waste food to go in. happy day's I though I have always wanted a pack of foxes prowling around my front door, saves me getting a dog to protect my property. I will just put a sign up BEWARE OF THE FOXES!!!!

on a serious note I think it is a good idea to have the blue tubs. I always fill the pink recycling bag up to the brim with junk mail and my recycling items. My black sack hardly get's full up now :=)

I take your point about the bags, I did'nt realise that some such as yourself have bags still, horrible especially when they tear or split open :(

Nik, lol I bet I would yes, and if charities would benefit then thats fine by me :D but as we only have a small place we would'nt be able to store them all until sold lol

Well I just asked my Mum yet again (she hates me for asking all the time lol) what each bin is for, and green is kitchen waste, blue is paper and such, and the brown is for garden waste, but as I stated before the garden is getting smaller and smaller as the bins pile up, so in the end there will be little need for the brown one lol

But bags, no Joan I am very grateful we don't have bags, we used to though, but that was many years back, but I remember having to lug those bags down four flights of steps and in many instances I had them split on me, and the mess and smells......yuk, does'nt bear thinking about.

I'm sure they'd love that Nik, both collectors come on the same day and sometimes the same time, so you can imagine the congestion outside, and if we all did that they would never get off our estate!! lol might make the council change their mind about the number of bins they give us :) yeah I wish!!

I don't think your council would appreciate that delay Chris.

Our orange bags are see through so if something is in there that doesn't belong it gets tagged so you have to sort it out or it gets put in the normal rubbish collection lorry.
The only problem with that is that if the orange collection bin comes after the normal one it will get left in front of my fence and there's no guarantee that it's even my bag as the bin men tend to throw bags from several households in front of me so the lorry only stops in certain places :sa:

I'm not sure if you knew that I was joking or not Joan, I find it hard to tell if someone is joking or not sorry :o

We have a cul-de-sac that runs up alongside us and often when one collection comes, they help the other collectors to come out by pulling their bins to the entrance of the cul-de-sac therefore taking a chance that anyone wanting to go out or return won't happen.......to me this is ridiculous, I can't help but get worked up over things, things that are trivial to most people seriously get to me, and often the air turns blue to the extreme, but I shan't go into this, just bear in mind the name Jekyll and Hyde :(

My brother removes the paper from glass containers and washes them out. Separates paper, plastic, glass, and metal and recycles everything. Uses rain water for his garden and flower bed. I on the other side am the UGLY American. Everything goes to the landfill in green plastic bags, but I am starting to feel a little guilty about it. Just not enough to get off my ass and recycle. Here you have to take the items to a recycle center. They have curb pickup where my brother lives.

My Computer

In Southern Scotland, Dumfries and Galloway, where I live, we only have a light blue bin for newspapers, everything else either goes in the wheely bin or you have to lug it to the recycling plant or stations yourself. So count youselves lucky.

Sorry to the PETA members in advance but I had a flashback to my youth in the 50's. Many a hour was spent at the landfill plunking at rats with a slingshot, bb gun, and 22 in my youth. Now after having gone thru Vietnam I hesitate stepping on a spider.
