Registry Cleaner

I read on one of the CNet courses one should clean the registry occasionally for proper OS maintenance. They suggested a free download of ToniArts Easy Cleaner. I downloaded their software and ran the clean cycle on my registry. The software told me I had 182 invalid files, so I attempted to delete them. However, when I hit the "delete all" button it would blink and then do nothing. I tried this 3 times with the same results.
So my question is; should I be cleaning my registry occasionally, and if so, what is the best software to do it with?

Thank you in advance for any assistance on this subject.
