RePartitioning Hard Drive

I recently reformatted my hard drive and I would like to change the size of the partitions.

I am using an HP Pavillion dv9700 laptop with a 220 gig hard drive and Vista Home Premium.

I would like to shrink D: and expand C:. When I right click Computer and select Manage I can successfully shirnk D: by 30 gig and it shows that 30 gig is available, however, when I try and Expand C: by 30 gig the Expand option is not available.

Do I need to reboot first before trying to Expand C: or is there another option?

Help is always appreciated.

Hello Rusty and welcome to the forums

Yes, you need to reboot before trying to edit another partition.

That partition change hasn't been made yet and will be done when you reboot. Then you'll be free to edit your other partitions

Thanks for the reply, however, that didn't seem to solve the problem.

I shrank the D: drive; rebooted and went back into "manage" however, the
C: drive "expand" was not available...."expand" was only available on the D: drive.

Any other suggestions?

You cannot change a drive that is in use.

Can you post a http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/289032-screenshots-files-upload-post-vista-forums.html

of your disk management window expanded to show all partitions.

That's why you can't expand it, D partition is on a separate physical drive.

What are you trying to do? make more room on C?

I really feel like a knucklehead. I had no idea that my laptop had two physical hard drives. I thought I had one 220 gig drive that was partitioned.

I'm trying to give myself more room on C: but I guess that's not possible.

You're not a knucklehead, you learned something.

You can move your user folders to the D partition to give you more room on C.

Here's a tutorial for moving user folders to another location,

Follow the steps in method one, any questions just ask.

This is a good idea anyway, since it separates your data from the OS if some unforeseen tragedy were to occur.
