When I open a a certain program I keep getting the error code
"windows Host Process (Rundll32) is not responding. What does this mean and how can I fix it? Thanks

Can you be a little more specific?

What "certain program"? What exactly happens, i.e. do you get an error window? If so, what exactly does it say? Check in Control Panel > Administrative Tools >Windows Logs > Application - there should be an entry there.

Easiest way to report these is to use the Snipping Tool http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/148532-how-use-snipping-tool-vista.html?filter[11]=Programs%20Features.

Open up a command prompt through the right-click and "Run as administrator." Type sfc /scannow. Hit return to start the system file checker; this checks and rebuilds system files it finds are faulty, including many of your system DLLs. Sometimes you might have to do it twice.

Rundll32 is a valid Vista OS program that comes with Vista. It runs parts of dynamic link libraries (DLLs) like operating code. It wouldn't fail unless it's faulty or the code it's running is faulty. Thus, sfc /scannow is called for.

Run it twice, and report back what happens. There are other measures you can do to diagnose the problem but sfc fixes, like, 80 percent of system dll faults.

Sorry bout that. The program I am trying to run is called Vangaurd(TM). It's a scurity program that lets you monitor security cameras remotely that you have set up outside your house etc. You can hook the camera to your pc via ports or you can hook it directly to a tv. I know the camera is working because I can hook it to the tv and I am able to see what's happening outside. X10 is the company that sells the equipment and of course they send you the software program if the system you bought requires it. The funny thing is that it was working and I only had 1 camera set up just to see how the thing works. One night I think windows was doing an update and I think my pc was shut off accidentally. That's when the problem all started. It may be related it may not.

I would click on the icon that starts the viewing program and nothing would happen. However I could see it down in the tool tray at the bottom of the screen. So again I would click on it and nothing would happen. So to close it out I would have to right click on it and that's when I would get the rundll32 error. It would give me the option of Close the Program or Wait for the program to respond. It never responds so I close the program.

OK....Ed Canuck I followed your instructions (Check in Control Panel > Administrative Tools >Windows Logs > Application) but after I click on Administrative Tools, I don't have an option that says Application.

pauliewalnuts....ran sfc /scannow application twice and both times the results were" Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations". What can I do next?

Thanks guys for your help.

My apologies... :o

Should have read Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer, then, in left pane, click on Windows Logs > Application.

Well my window doesn't look like your but I did find some errors in the application window, but what am I suppose to do withthe info in this window?

My Computer

Post 'em. For instance, the 2 faults associated with my particular application error I tinypic'ed above are:

Faulting application QP.exe, version 2.4.0.3619, time stamp 0x4768fb7f, faulting module _wingdi.dll, version 3.0.1166.2202, time stamp 0x47023d14, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x000082a1, process id 0xe90, application start time 0x01cadb9bbc472b5a.

and

Faulting application QP.exe, version 2.4.0.3619, time stamp 0x4768fb7f, faulting module _wingdi.dll, version 3.0.1166.2202, time stamp 0x47023d14, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x000082a1, process id 0xe90, application start time 0x01cadb9bbc472b5a.

We want exception codes, process names, all that good stuff.

pauliewalnuts.....hmmmm really didn't see what you are talking about

Windows host process (Rundll32) has stopped working.

It's right there in the middle of the thread.

My Computer

Uh, naw. Let's see if we can work with what we got first. How much RAM does your computer have?

Also, in the "Control Panel," open the "System" applet. On the upper left is "Advanced System Settings." Open that and then the "Advanced" tab, and the first "Settings" button, the one that's under the 'Performance' section. In the second, "Advanced," tab, see and post in a reply how much Virtual Memory the computer has right now and also how it's managed (you find this out by hitting the "Change" button, and it details inside how Vista manages virtual memory).

If you don't have much memory to work with from the get-go and a program like Vanguard is running that uses up alot of high-level, wide-access data in tables, you're going to get faults regardless of what version of Vista you use.

Here's what I found out
Virtual memory

A paging file is an area on the hard disk that Windows uses
as if it were RAM
Total paging file size for all drives: 1193 MB

When I hit the change button, here is what I get:
The is a check mark in the box that says:

Automactically manage paging file size for all drives
Paging file size for each drive
Then everything below it is grayed out

At the bottom it says:
Total paging file size for all drives
Minimum allowed: 16 MB
Recommended: 1339 MB
Current allocated: 1993 MB

Man, that's nowhere near enough RAM + virtual RAM to run a program that's video-intensive like that Vanguard camera program and keep Vista stable! Go back to your virtual RAM manager and SERIOUSLY up that number; mine is somewhere around 4,900 kilobytes of virtual memory (which is more than 4 Gigabytes), and that's even with 4 Gigs of RAM and my computer is very lightly stressed.

4,017 kilobytes for you would not be an unreasonable number for Vista to accept unless your hard drive is literally jam-packed to the gills. That's 3 times the "recommended."

Let me be the first to say that that x10 Vanguard website is some bull****. I looked all around their website for program requirements for any of their software and they all have the same "convenience" (aka bull****) phrasing:

to the tune of the Beastie Boys' "Some Old Bull****" said:
Designed to work on Windows based personal computers with two available USB ports, and an Internet connection to download software and program updates.

That's the worst program requirement description I've ever read in my life for a piece of commercial software. Period.

Paulie out.

And get you some more RAM.

Thanks Paulie for all your assistance.

Per pauliewalnuts I got some more RAM. As a matter of fact I maxed it out per the maufacturers specification. Still have same problem. Anyone with any suggestions?
