Solved scanning issues

Just got my new Vista Home Premium setup. It's nice for the most part but the compatability crap is starting to get to me. I have an HP Photosmart 2510 all in one printer that has been great for years. Worked fine with XP. Now I can't scan with Vista. I have the correct software installed from HP's site. I can print no problem but I can not scan. By the way this is wirelessly. If I connect a USB direct to the printer I can scan just fine. But wirelessly it will not work. Any one have any suggestions?

So, you're saying you got this 163 MB file HP Full Feature Software and Drivers HP PSC 2510 Photosmart All-in-One Printer and installed it and cannot scan wirelessly?

Or did you happen to get this 48 MB file HP PSC 2510/2510xi/2550 Photosmart All-in-One Basic Driver v4.2.0 Windows 98/ME/2000/XP and install it and cannot scan, when it clearly states

This installation DOES NOT support network (Ethernet or wireless) installations.

Right. I have the full feature 163MB software and I can not scan wirelessly.

I need to know the error messages or anything like that - when you installed that driver I linked to you should have been able to see the scanner as a wireless device - in fact the installer should have set it up for you after asking how you connected to it....

I don't really get an error message. If I try to scan from my pc by openning the program, it just tells me "no HP device was found" and "the program is going to close." If I try it from the printer/scanner it says "scan options are not set. Install or run device software on computer."
I guess I could try installing the software one more time.

Try first seeing if you can set the driver to look for a wireless scanner - it may be defaulting to look for a wired scanner so it cannot find one....

Thanks for all the help John. But keep in mind I am good with computers, not great. I don't know how to check the driver like you just said. I just uninstalled the software and am about to install it again.

I should have said look in the HP toolbox, which I assume gets installed with this thing as it did with my folks' Photosmart 6xxx series AIO.

I cannot recall exactly, as I set that machine up to be a wired connection, but you have to *strictly* follow the installation guide that is provided with the printer - and that means being very careful about including steps during the installation process to make sure you set up all components correctly.

Thanks. I usually am careful but there isn't much interaction with the install. It pretty much does it all. I do make sure that I tell it it will be connected wirelessly when completed. Thats about all it asks, from what I remember. It's in process of re-installing as I type.

It's a major PITA installing the software so many times because I have to unplug the All in one and drag it downstairs and plug it directly into the router while it installs.

Now I am stuck. I am getting error messages during the install. "error while saving the settings to the device." Thats all I get. There are no options or anything.

did you uninstall the software first? If not, try canceling the install process and then uninstalling the software and then starting from scratch.

yes I uninstalled it first. Restared the computer and am trying the install again.

Man who's paying you to do all this work online helping people? Thanks alot. Anyway I got it! Seventh times a charm. I think what was happening was it was not uninstalling the software correctly or something. I manually uninstalled everything and then re-downloaded the software for the 64 bit system. Installed it and it works great, even wirelessly. Thanks again John. Get some sleep. Thats where I'm going.

Heh - no one - and I have been doing it a long time, only just recently discovered this place because I finally joined the x64 crowd.

I do get something out of this though - I learn new fixes and it keeps my troubleshooting skills sharp - so that at work / with clients, I have a ready answer a lot faster for issues I have seen fixed elsewhere. So, in the end, I do get paid for this - just in a round about manner.

And re: your wireless scanner - glad it finally worked.

Interestingly enough, I actually had to run through the installer at my folks' hose 3 or 4 times myself before it worked - but once I got it there it has worked flawlessly.
