Solved Silverlight

On the heels of recent JAVA safety advisory red flag from Homeland Security, I have come to realize I have had programs, like Java which I do not need. (Since I deleted Java days ago my PC has not shown the slightest evidence of malfunction).

Now I wonder if I need Silverlight. I am not a programmer. (Ihave no clue what a programmer is or what he does). I do not use Netflex. All my online video viewing it seems is thru Flash player.

What happens if I delete Silverlight? What non-progammer's computering might I jeopardize?

Hello Tony,

It depends on if you watch any videos in your web browsers that use Silverlight or not.

You could uninstall it to see. If you get a notice that you need to install it while browsing, then you could easily reinstall it again.

All I know of that uses Silverlight is netflix streaming so you if you use that you'll want to keep it. Overall I don't believe that it is widely used.

Since I do not use netflix, I am (my PC is)absolutely normal without silverlight.

Now I wonder what the latest is on Java...which I am also now without.

In summary I am quite normal sans Silverlight and Java...and a few MB's of free HD space gained.

There is only one site that I use, now and then, that needs java. It is a site that tests ping.

There are so many security warnings about Java, including one from the Government, all who have this limited use software installed are looking for trouble.

OK...I deleted Java days ago but it seems I still have some Java files left behind. I found in Program Files (x86) a 15.9 MB file titled
jre-windows-i586. What is this?

And where do I find Javascript?(and what is it?). I understand it is not a security concern. But do I need it?

(My apologies...I know this is not silverlight anymore. Should I make this reply a new thread?)

I believe that jre is related to java however javascript is not. It is built into your browser and it is more widely used on the web than Java so I recommend that you don't try to remove it.

The JRE (Java Runtime Environment) file I found was an exe application file for downloading an older Java version. I have deleted it with no noticeable deleterious consequence. (How did I keep Java all this time while apparently I did not have to?).

I have no more file with Java in it. My browser has some Java add-ons but are now listed as NOT AVAILABLE. Seems like I have finally purged myself of any Java stuff. And....I cannot locate Javascript. Might as well since it should not be deleted.

You shouldn't have deleted jre but uninstalled it. Now windows still thinks that it is there.

Perhaps I should reiterate and explain my self on the subject of javascript. Other than the name it has nothing to do with java therefore you don't need to remove it and in fact it isn't actually installed in your computer but is built into your browser. In fireofx there are a number of plugins that will block it however the functionality of many sites will be reduced and doing so might even prevent you from using it altogether. Whereas java isn't frequently used javascript is. It might even be used by this site however for the most part it's use is benign. It's power can be abused but only on sites that you shouldn't be visiting anyway. You can try a plugin to block it however you will certainly find that many of the sites that you frequent won't work as well if at all.
