Over the past week I have been trying to fix a sound problem that seems to incurred after an update (unfortunately i dont know which one!)

I have lost surround sound via my headphones so therefore voices and sounds in games are either stereo, completely dissapear, gun sounds are very tinny and footsteps are impossible to distinguish which direction they are coming from

I have updated to all latest drivers but that hasnt helped at all

Useful information for you guys is I have a AC-1 Sound Card running on vista 64 bit

So frustrating!

Also if it helps:

* I have tried completely removing ac1 sound drivers and reinstalling
* If I run from the onboard VIA audio its still exactly the same
* DXdiag detects no problems
* Speakers instead of headphones do exactly the same
* Online audio is also very tinny (terrible) and music I have on HD
* I have checked windows updates

Hi Iammrj

I assume you're using Vista.
First thing you can do is to open Control Panel from the Start Menu,
and then click Sound, (Tab Play should be open).
Double click the active sound device (mine is Realtek Digital Output)
You should now see a window called "Properties of Realtek Digital Output"
Click on the Enhancements tab.
Here you can choose different audio options.
Maybe there are settings changed by the update, (Or Windows, in a weird mood, has changed the settings)

I suggest you do some experimenting with the settings,
to see (hear) if you can get some improvement.
It is possible that other members on the Forum can offer a better solution.
So if the suggestion above does not work,
maybe someone else could provide a better solution.

Success
Sweet

Hi Sweet

Sorry yes its Vista Home premium 64 bit

I will have a look when I get home from work but from what I remember in control panel-sound-devices there is only the AC1 HD audio and the VIA HD audio, I'm almost certain there is no Realtek Audio (maybe thats the problem)

I have had a play with the various settings and nothings seems to improve at all

What is really strange is that Youtube videos, the sound is fine 30 seconds then goes terrible
, there is also no clearly defined left and right speaker sound when I test it

Whats also bizarre is that Vista has seemed to take longer to load up since this problem, it gets stuck on the screen before you enter your login for about a minute

My systems is

core i5
320gd Hitachi SATA II
4gb Corsair Dominator RAM
5870 Graphics
Asust P7P55D - PRO motherboard

Hopefully this helps

I would start by making a back up. Then go into your (Add/remove programs) *Programs and features* and select the last update you installed. and repeat the process until the system is back the way it was. Then once you have found the bad egg write down the KB number and DO not install that update :D I have had that issue happen to me several times. Especially while using windows automatic updates. I won't reccomend you to not use automatic updates as everyone uses their pc's differently. But I do suggest that you at least change it to let you review the updates before installing them.
