Are the links at the top of [sticky] thread supposed to lead to downloadable standalone SP's?
I tried the "download" and all it tells me(on the next page) is "thank you for downloading", i don't get the bar at bottom of screen that gives the option to "save or run". Have i missed something?
Microsoft Download Center hasn't supported Internet Explorer 7 for years, and in fact it now seems that IE 9 is no longer supported. You can either install Firefox or use your Windows 10 to download the service packs.

That would explain why i'm having some of the issues, coz i'm relying on vista/IE 9 to get what i need ATM.
W10 is down and i've scratched the disc, so can't reinstall.
Any other sites to get standalone without drowning in rubbish ya don't want?
Or some way to force SP1 to install?

Just a bit further along than when i did this "sfc /scannow". Perhaps fixing this might help?

Might have it with "firefox", download successful. Your a staaar.
Will post again if it all works out.

All good. Firefox installed on smaller HDD, found SP1.
Installed SP1 + SP2, IE9 + Firefox on larger HDD.
Just need to get Vista on larger drive past the "stuck updates" business.
Heads still reeling from getting through that with the smaller HDD.

Much obliged for the suggestions, i think were almost done.

Oh, and the "sfc /scannow" done post SP1 install, indicates that all is now as it should be.

Now to find a fix for the scratched W10 disc, and reinstall that.

Finally got there. Fresh install of Vista(71GB) on larger/newer HDD is right up to date, after following the direction's for "stuck updates" using "Dalai's" workaround(think thats the one). Took a bit to figure out how to get the WUSA updates loaded(turn of update in services after each install/reboot), got there in the end.

Older Vista install(46GB) is still a bit messed up due to corrupt registry files(sfc /scannow can't fix) but MSE is up to date and WU says its up to date, only finding MSE definitions. Looking for answers, but in the end this install will most likely get scrapped.

Now to get to work on a backup and or ISO to keep it in good order, and get W10 going again...

...tried to load a saved to USB copy of standalone SP1. It worked the last time i used it...are the SP1/SP2 downloads a use once and throw away deal?

Hello timmeh. I'm glad you were able to find your way through Dalai's workaround. I didn't know it when you started this thread in August, but while trying variations of the workaround I learned that Microsoft standalone installers only work once. That must be why you were unable to use a stored copy of SP1 that you had used before. It is possible to store a standalone installer for future use, but it must be a copy that hasn't already been run. This is a good time to think about making a backup image with Macrium or similar software.

"I learned that Microsoft standalone installers only work once." Are you sure, i managed to get SP2 to work. That had been run before and the WUSA updates all got run twice, as doing the same fix on two installs on separate HDD's.
Saved files to PC, ran files on one install. When that was sorted, copied files to flashdrive and ran all files on older install straight from the flashdrive.
All worked as good as can be expected, The older install has registry files corrupted (been that way for some time, not yet figured out how to fix it) but overall, still functions as it should.

EDIT: Confirmed, copies of used WUSA updates were used to update second HDD for the DEC. 2016 round.
All worked fine.
