Speed up my download speeds?

I have a BT Home Hub (English Router), and 4-5 laptops running off it.
is there any way I can improve my download speeds, does using ethernet help? I just need to improve them.

I am shocked (and jealous) over BT's basic package: 8MB/sec.

Do you use them as a provider or did you just get the hub? What speeds are you getting?
