System Restore Failure

I have tried everyone of my available restore points and they won't work. After selecting the desired restore point, it goes through the whole process, shuts down, restarts, then gives me an error that it was able to perform the task. Please help. Thanks!

Turn off System Restore, boot
Turn it back on. Your old points will be lost (they may be corrupt)
Then try to make a restore point. If it does not work, try to make a point in clean boot
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
If that does work follow the clean boot procedure to solve the problem

I can bet that the problem will be found with clean boot. It is probably your anti virus or other maintenance program that is causing the problem

If the above does not work try in safe mode, if it works that will give us a handle on the problem.

Hi Enforcer7,

Welcome to Vista Forums!

System restore problems can be caused by malware as System Restore is deadly to malware and so a lot of it tries to disable system restore as part of what they do. Before turning off System Restore, let's try to make sure it isn't an infection causing the problem that we can remove and perhaps resolve the problem without losing any of the historical restore points which may be fine (probably not - but possible) but just inaccessible because of the malware.

First, update your current security software (what are the names and versions of what you are using?) and run a full scan of your system and cleanup anything it finds. Then download, install, update, and run Malwarebytes: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php to help verify the system is clean - and cleanup anything it finds. If they find and remove any malware or viruses, then reboot and see if system restore now functions properly.

If not, proceed as Richard wisely suggested.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Hello!

System Restore can fail for a number of reasons. Please try everything suggested above, and then can you please tell us why you want to do a System Restore? Maybe, just maybe, we know the solution to your problem. System Restore failures can be caused by corruptions, real time protection, and don't hold me to this, but might as well be caused by a servicing stack update.

Richard
