System restore

I tried to do a system restore and received the message: System restore did not complete successfully. Your computer system files and settings were not changed.
Details:
Insufficient storage available to create the shadow copy data (0x8004231F).

Can someone tell me how to create storage?

System restore (Advanced)

I would like to do a system restore (advanced) back a month because I have many issues. The listing of restore points shows dates but also shows that the backup location is not available. When I click on any of them a message states: The disk containing the backup is not accessible. Please make sure it is turned on and connected to the computer. How is this done? Thanks.

Did you make the restore to the drive that had the original? You cannot put the points any place else.

That sounds like the System Restore points were stored on a secondary (slave) drive that was removed or a external hard drive that is not connected. Or it could also be a false positive from malware related issues. I don't think anyone will know until we find out how much used/free space is on your C:/ drive.

I think the real question is, what problems are you are encountering that are leading you to attempt a System Restore?

System restore does not work if put on an external drive.

I've been able to do it before, especially on an XP that didn't have enough memory to store continuous restore and memory dump files. We're not sure that someone didn't hand this computer to him who had done the same thing I did... :\

Yes, I've done it before on 7 as well, saved it to my external hard drive/ USB flash drive.

My OS(C:) Properties shows 33 GB of used space and 100 GB of free space. My Recovery(E:) Properties shows 79 MB of free space of a total of 14.9GB.

My security software has been notifying me of threat detection. I believe there is a malware issue: slow connections, redirects, unprompted tabs (popups?).

Would system restore possibly resolve these issues?

It should, but be very careful, to go back far enough to avoid having the virus in the restore point.

When a virus is afoot, anything is possible. It is best to dispense with it as soon as possible. I'm not confident a roll back to a prior restore point would alleviate the problem completely. It's best to deal with it now, before doing anything else. Malewarebytes is a great tool and many here have reported success in using it to remove pesky infections.

The other thing... your drive dedicated for backups has only 79Mb free. That's hardly anything. I wonder if the virus is taking up space on it. On my system, I have a D: drive for backups with an 11Gb allocation and there's usually about 1.8Gb free. Only 79Mb may not be enough to do whatever is necessary to successfully process the restore from that drive.

Using System Restore is a 50/50... It really all depends on the type of virus/malware your machine was infected with... I've had some where it worked, I've had bad ones that infected the system restore and made it unusable as what appears to have happened to you. It definitely sounds like malware in your case.

1. Did you happen to catch the name of the virus?

2. Did you run any scans? What is your current anti-virus software?
