USB port problem

hey guys and gals
my son retuned home this weekend with his HP Compaq CQ61 Notebook and told me his dongles, Itouch and stuff dont work ??
told me his mum had it at a shop and the guy did a restore and couldn't find the problem or fix it ??? I wonder what kind off shop it was ??

so i took a look and looks like someone has try'd to put something or FORCE something into USB port ? i'v uploaded a pic from silly phone sorry about Quality but u can see that the port on the right is broken ? AKA Wont work now :sarc:
the port on the left looks ok, so i try'd to hook up ex HD, Iphone and nothing works ? no power to device and PnP dont find anything new ?
i checked Device Manager and states that Drivers are ok and up to date ?

so the right one is gone and needs replaced
i thought the left one would still work but seems not to ? should it ?

any ideas and advice of what else to check or do
thx in advance
Barry

Sounds like they're both out of whack. No problems in Device Manager under USB controllers?

Most of these have 3 USB ports; is there another one?

What's the exact model number?

Sorry, shadey.

I think your USB ports are screwed.

You should contact HP and see what they suggest.

still no joy yet
i went through pretty much all ports and controllers individually in Device Manager and ran Online Software Update to find that a few updated and most were running latest version 'that Windows said' i also ran Driver Doctor which told me 7 drivers needed updating ??
why does Driver Doctor say that ? so i checked again the suspect drivers to find the same result as previous Windows determind that lastest sofware installed , so i'm still no further forward
is there anything else i can do or not done before i phone HP ? When using HP Total Care Advisor it also states that the PC is upto Date ?

Windows doesn't pick up the latest drivers; it only knows that the ones installed are later than anything else it knows about.

Check on the HP web site for your model to verify what the latest ones are.

As an interim 'fix', can I suggest that you get yourself either a 4x or 7x multi-port hub to fully utilise the one remaining port, and lifeline.

Logitech and Targus brands are both good and reliable, and won't burn a hole in your pocket either.

Another thing you can try in the meantime:

In Device Manager expand all listings of USB roots and hubs...
Right clik every one and select Remove/Uninstall...
You will recieve an error message...ignore it.

Upon re-boot Windows will automatically re-install them.
