User account problems

Hopefully someone will be able to help me here,

I've recently reinstalled Windows and when it came to ask for an account name, I wrote TOm by mistake and didn't check if before changing the name.

So I tried to change the name to Tom, but it says something about it being the same name, so I changed it from TOm > User > Tom. But now it treats this account as Tom_2. Like when I open command prompt, the text shown is C:\Users\Tom_2\

It's really annoying, I've got a right mess with Firefox settings pointing to the wrong download folder as well and not willing to change because apparently they are the same thing.

How can I fix all of this?

And if it isn't fixable, is there an easy way to transfer my files, programs and settings from one account to another?

Thanks,

Tom

Hey buddy,
I would try two things. Change the name to something really different, then try Tom, again.
If that does not work, you can transfer all but programs with Windows Easy Transfer.
and there is this.

Can you transfer between accounts on the same PC? - Windows 7 Forums

Good luck, buddy

Hi Rich

Thanks for the help :) I would rep you for it, but I have done too recently so a thank you will have to suffice this time!

I've already tried to do that, and that's what caused the _2 suffix on my account folder.

Thanks for the easy-transfer link, I'll give that a go in a second and let you know how it goes :)

Thanks again,

Tom

Easy Transfer will work. Before installing Seven I wanted to test easy transfer. I tranferred from one Vista Account to another. Setting, favorites, desktop, everything but programs was transferred.

Hello Tom!

I can't exactly give you an answer unfortunately (but Rich already has with Easy Transfer and other links)

There is no supported method of changing the name of the C:\Users\....\ folder.

It has been tried before, but almost every attempt has led to a "The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded." error. If you fiddle a few registry keys and values, some have achieved success, and so it can't be very many or very hard, but I honestly have no idea what they are off the top of my head.

If I were you, just migrate to a new account.

If you want to give this a try, create a new temporary profile, and log on as this, undo permissions and ownership on your profile folder, and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList key, rename your profile folder, fiddle the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList key, restore the TrustedInstaller as owner of both, and log off and back on again.

See here for more about that registry key: Error message: "The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded

I shall try this out over the weekend, and come back to you on if I ever got it working, if you choose not to follow this madness!

Well I gave it a go and it worked brilliantly :) I've just got to get used to the username Admin though. Thanks for your help Rich - I really appreciate it

Thank you for your help Richard, I've already sorted it all with easy-transfer :) Your suggestion sounds really intruguing! I would have loved to try it, if I ever get this problem again, I definitely will. If I find a spare minute or two, then I'll also give it a go

Thanks again guys,

Tom

  Not a leak! First official release from Microsoft! See here: Windows Dev Center

Be aware that this is an extremely unstable developmental release, which does not work on most virtual machines. In fact, the only one it does work on is Hyper-V.

And the BSoD has changed (at the moment I am just too stunned to decide whether I prefer it or not)

Also available are the first official release of many developer tools. Full Windows 8 (4.8GB) + HyperV Trial (1.0GB) for the win!

Please note that Microsoft will NOT accept any bug reports for this release.

Even better! Thanks for the link :D I'm downloading it now, but on my speeds it may take a while!

I might attempt to triple boot with it :) Saves me faffing around with a VM.

Well at least they kept it blue! ;) But I agree, it's a little cheesy now but I expect it will grow on me.

Good luck with that Tom! I am also downloading it! With any luck I will wake tomorrow morning to find two .iso files waiting for me!

P.S. If you get a HAL_INITIALIZATION_FAILED BSoD when starting up Windows 8, it means that internal HAL and driver support for your hardware has not been written yet. At that point you should fall back to Hyper-V (best), or Virtual Box (works for most, but with inferior results).

Also, Hyper-V is actually 1.53GB, not 1.0GB. Sorry about that!
