Video Desparation

I am trying to repair a HP DV9000 laptop and am having some serious problems diagnosing the problem.

The problem is when you start the laptop everything looks fine until you past the windows screen where the scrolling green bar is. After that all you get is a black screen - no cursor, nothing...

I tried restoring from the recovery partition with the same problem. I finally got an installation disk. I put in the COA number and everything seemed to go well, Vista installed but you have a basic machine with no drivers, but the machine booted into windows.

As soon as I install the nVidia driver and reboot we are back to the black screen again. So this looks interesting... There are obviously drivers in the recovery partition which I tried, I also downloaded the drivers from HP and directly fron nVidia all three gives the same black screen.

Interesingly though, when you put in a CD/DVD and restart, there is a bit which says something like "press any key to boot from CD or DVD", but it doesn't. What I get is a random set of characters (all A to Z) that looks like what is it supposed to say but also looks like one of the languages from the baltic states - something like "synve dly fkr to eoot sseo CD or DVD".

I've tried getting windows to repair, but it can't and restoring gives the same problems.

Has anyone got any ideas what to do? Please don't tell me the video card has packed up

Thanks
