Vista hanging

Recently programs running under Vista (SP2) like Outlook 2007 and IE 8 would "stop responding" for significant periods - then start again. The delays made the system so frustrating I wanted to throw the machine across the room (Dell XPS M1530 with 4GB Ram). After dealing with this for a several weeks, I finally tried stopping the search indexing service. Doing this stopped this problem.

The indexing should be in the background and at a low priority to prevent this problem but apparently it doesn't. I don't have a clue how to provide this feedback to MS, should they care enough to fix it.

I don't have this issue on my desktop running Windows 7 or on my XP machine - only on the Vista machine. I plan on moving this machine to W7 soon so the issue will be short lived.

I just wanted to post my experience here for what it is worth.

My Computer

Run anti virus check

Donwload and run malwarebytes

Check for memory with memory diagnostics test (type the name in search and perform over night)

Disable the A/V and see how it runs

Try perform a clean boot
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Try running in safe mode

We should be able to detect the problem and then, maybe even solve it.
