Vista Log In Problem

This morning something interesting happened when I turned my HP pavillion dv6z entertainment pc laptop on. I was able to get on smoothly the first time, but as I could not get an internet connection, I restarted my pc and then the problem began. It turned on alright...the login/welcome screen soon popped up, and I entered the correct password and hit enter, yet after that the "welcome" text just stayed there, not actually taking me into my computer and the desktop. It stayed like that for fifteen minutes before I was forced to turn the computer off myself.

Upon turning the pc back on, it gives the one screen that asks if you want to start windows normally or in safemode. In safemode I can get on my pc, which is how I am able to post this...but no matter how many times I restart my computer, turn it off and on, I can not get into my computer normally :< I was here for two hours trying to debug it. I have not installed anything new recently, as this just happened today. The last thing I installed was my wacom bamboo pen tablet, but after that I had no problem what so ever.

To fix this I have been going into safemode, restarting, shutting down and restarting, but to no avail. I have windows vista home premium. I am pretty good with computers, but not the best. I hope this is enough information and hope someone can help me. After this I am going to shut off my computer and hope that after a few hours off it will start <33

Thank you all very much :3 I hope I provided you with enough information, and if you need any additional information let me know. Thank you!!!

Hi,

I will have a proper think when I have a bit more time, but in the meantime try a System Restore from safe mode, sfc /scannow from safe mode, chkdsk and Start Up repair from your vista install disk. Sorry, I am quite busy now but will try and come back with better sugestions soon.

Sorry I am so busy now. Will try and come back later.

Hi,

Sorry I was so busy yesterday. I have plenty of time today and I hope I can help you to fix your problem. You can get into Safe Mode. This is a really good sign. It means that 1: you can actually follow instructions and 2: the problem is not so bad that minimalistic Safe Mode cannot start.

Do try the instructions I posted in my previous post. They may have been rushed, but they are still valid. In particular try the sfc /scannow from cmd. However try these possible solutions first:

In Safe Mode open msconfig.msc and on the Start-up tab disable everything non-essential. This is probably everything. (E.g. Windows Defender is not required for Windows to start so disable it) Try and start Windows normally. If it works, re-enable your start up applications 1 by 1 until you find the problem. If everything is disabled and Windows still will not start, carefully do the same for the services tab. BE WARNED: Many services are essential. Hide all Microsoft services to start with. A common problem is nVidia services. Disable all the silly nVidia services like "Media Tray"! DO NOT disable the nVidia driver or you will not see anything! ERR ON THE SIDE OF CAUTION WITH SERVICES!

Safe Mode works which suggests that it is a Start Up application that is causing your problem. Another possible cause is that your Hard Disk is starting to fail and Windows cannot read the sector where a file used at the Welcome screen is used. At the moment I will assume this is not the problem because we have not tried any of the simple or advanced solutions yet. How old is your computer and has it been making any weird noises lately? Don't worry though. A dying hard disk is unlikely at the moment. Just thought you ought to know.

If necessary, if all else fails, we can disable the GUI on start-up so that a start up looks like a safe mode start up. We can then enable Boot Logging and track down exactly which file is causing the hang.

If the solution listed above does not work, do try all the solutions in my previous post, they may help. If you need anything clarifying or any help with anything, be that you found a dodgy start up item or sfc /scannow found errors that it cannot fix automatically (annoyingly common), post back.

Tell me how things are going when you know, I will watch this thread for at least 2 weeks almost certainly longer. Don't worry about your hard disk; it is very unlikely that it is failing.

Hope I can fix your problem soon.

Richard
