vista problem

hi,new to this,so please bear with me.

have just built my first computer,using a asus p5kpl-cm motherboard,with a intel core2quad core Q6600,2x1 1gb blackdragon 1066 ddr2,500gb sata2 hard drive,a nvidi geforce 9800 gt 1gb graphic's card.

i installed XP sp3,and it ran beautiful,i then got vista ultimate,it loads to the point of desktop,then reboots leaving a black screen,with this in the top left of the screen:-- BOOTING"WINDOWS VISTA".

DONE!
FALLBACK 1
FIND--SET-ROOT/BOOTMGR.
and then the cursor just flashes and you can not do nothing with the comp apart from reinstall XP.
i went to the computer shop where i bought all the bits from and asked if he knew what the problem was,he said it could of been power supply not strong enough,so fitted new power supply,and i still get the same problem,so he suggested coming to this forum and asking you guy's and girls.

Hi landy39, welcome to the forums,

this error generally relates to a perceived invalid multiboot setup from within vista. it normally occurs on upgrade installs of vista over XP3.
was your install an upgrade or fresh install?

if you can get into vista after install at all (Safe Mode?), you can try to repair the Bootloader using either VistaBootPro or EasyBCD

if you do a clean install the problem should not happen

just that looking at all of your error message it maybe that you have been sold a dud copy

defo not a dud copy,bought it when i got all the bit's.

and to add insult to injury my mate loaded it to his p.c and it worked fine,just that his system has a different motherboard to mine otherwise i would have used his hard drive and give him mine,if you know what i mean.

the source for the Ultimate source was a brand new 500gb sata2 hard drive

ok was not making an accusation just that there are more duds about, in innocent hands, than you would imagine, using OEM copies of vista and the crack to fool vista into thinking there is an OEM bios present.

the only other thing That comes up in relation to this error was a case of incorrect jumper setting on the drive you may want to double check the settings on your new drive

other than that can't really offer anything more

This is fairly common. From Googling about it, apparently it only happens if Vista is installed after a previous operating system such as XP or Linux on this hard disk.

I would try wiping the disk clean so it looks like a brand new hard disk. Just a format is not sufficient because it doesn't remove what is in track 0 (the MBR boot code and the partition table).

I recommend you download Seatools for DOS using another PC and install it onto a bootable CD.

It comes as an iso image file. Don't just copy it onto the CD like you would with a music file, use the CD burner's option for "burn CD from iso image file".
If you don't have a CD burner such as Nero you can use the freeware ImgBurn

Seatools has several hard disk tests and also an item on its menu for wiping the hard disk (which overwrites every byte with zero).

Boot the Seatools CD on the problem PC. First run its tests to be sure the disk is not faulty. The surface scan test will also lock out any bad sectors from being used. Then do a 5 minute wipe with zeros. There's also an item for wiping the entire disk which takes a very long time but the 5 minute wipe is sufficient to clear track 0 and the first few tracks of the first partition, which is all you need.

Then when you start the Vista installer it will see a brand new HD so it will offer to create a new partition, format it as NTFS and install Windows on it.

To hell with the company. Ask for a refund. Trust another dealer.

This problem can happen with a genuine Vista DVD. I doubt if it's the fault of the company he bought it from.

I should add:
If you have more than one hard disk, it's best to disconnect every hard disk except the one you want to install Vista onto -- during the Seatools work to avoid wiping the wrong disk and also during the Vista install.

Yes run sea tools, but if that still provides no answers run a Hirens disk. You can google Hirens and find the ISO and burn a disk. If none of its tools find anything then get Memtest. Again a googleing and a burnt ISO later and your testing your memory to see if it's up to snuff.

Last option is reload XP and head for the ASUS website and check for BIOS updates for you motherboard. In your situation I would flash them with the newest image regardless if your up to date or not. Just to try and be sure theres no chip coruption.

Bad hardware is not all it could be. It can be caused by certain kinds of corruption left on the hard disk by previous operating systems. Several people have reported fixing this problem successfully by clearing the hard disk and doing a fresh install of Vista.

thanks for the reply,to keep you updated so far:-replaced hard drive for another new one,lads in the shop very helpful,so is a virgin hard drive,he also changed the vista disc,i used my 2nd hard drive which has XPsp3 to do updates to motherboard,and guess what,it still wont have it ,wish i hadn't bothered now
