Vista Trouble

I recently bought a new desktop. Os is the vista home premium edition. The internet often lose its connection. My msn keeps on re-connecting again and again.
when i checked the status of the connection, everything is perfectly fine, the signal strength is excellent.

I have no problems with my previous xp desktop. Everything is excellent, well, until it crash.

Help, anyone got a solution???

The problem with your internet connection could be either a troublesome router, a bad line, or just a poor ISP. Investigate this matter more closely with your ISP.

And as for the crash, what do you mean? Does the computer restart without warning? This could be a BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death). To see what the BSOD says, do the following (when the computer is fine):

1. Click the Start Orb
2. Right-click on "Computer", then select "Properties"
3. Click "Advanced System Settings"
4. Under "Advanced"->"Startup and Recovery", click "Settings"
5. Remove the check from the "Automatically Restart" option in "System Failure"
6. Click "OK"
7. Click "OK" again

The next time you have a BSOD (if this is your problem), it will now remain on-screen untill you press the computers reset button, or power off then on again.

Tell us what the STOP code (STOP 0x000000ED or similar) is, and its english translation (PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA, or something like that)

Thanks. but what is ISP and how do I investigate it more closely??? Oh my laptop also have the same Internet problem. I connect it with wireless connection.

Try connecting directly to the router with a etherlink cable and see if the problem goes away. If it does, you have wireless issues on your router, if not, you need to call your ISP and have them help you. MSN's serve might be having problems too. Do your contacts on MSN have the same issue?

My desktop is connected with ethernet cable, the problem is still there. I'm at a total lost. My previous desktop dosen't have this problem and FYI I'm using the same modem.

I think my modem have wireless issues, my laptop also have the same Internet problem at home but when I connect it on my campus, it works perfectly fine.

No my MSN contacts do not have the same issue.

Try doing a total hard reset of your router. Use the factory reset button that is often accessible only through a small hole in the rear of the router. There is a certain way to use this button detailed in your router's manual. Consult your router's manual to do this procedure properly. It will reset everything to factory settings including the log on password to the router and all factory default settings. You will need to log on using the factory default user name and password and re enter your own password for log on and also re do the set up of your wireless security and any other port forward settings.

In an experience with my own router, I was advised to do this from the manufacturer's technical support to cure similar problems and it worked for me, so may also work for you. It's a bit of a pain to re enter all your router passwords and port forwarding, but could be worth your while to see if it fixes your problem. If not, a known good router would be the only way to brand your existing router "defective" or eliminate it as the source of your trouble.

Of course, if a known good router does not fix the problem, the problem lies elsewhere.

Hi duffers,

If Jim's advice about resetting your router to factory condition and then reconfiguring it works, you might like to use the option to back up these settings to a file (see router manual for details). That way, should you ever need to do this again, you will merely have to restore the settings from this file without having to manually enter them, thus eliminating possible errors.
