Vista won"t boot up

Gentlemen I have an Acer Aspire 5315 laptop cpu intel celeron 540 1.86ghz,hdd Toshiba mk1246gsx,system bios version v1.21,The problem I am having is on start up the acer screen comes up , then the green bar moves form left to right as if it is loading It then goes to a black screen saying Windows failed to start It may be a hardware or software change may be the cause. On this screen it says launch start up repair, Launch windows normally,When I click on repair it just keeps comming back to the same screen. If I launch windows normally It does the same thing it did on start up. Iam not very familiar with laptops Do they beep like a desktop as I have no beeps at all on start up.I can:t boot in safe mode, I tried a recovery disc and it loads the files but when it gets to 100% it goes to a black screen. Any suggestions appreciated Thanx You guy" s helped me before with my grandsons computer Thanx again

What is the make of your hard drive - and what hard drive test did you run?

Try running the SeaGate SeaTools test to see if that works.
You can also try the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test.

In the past the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test was my tool of choice.
Recently (the last 4 to 6 months) I've found it working less and less - so I've switched to the Seagate SeaTools test. If find that more reliable (especially with newer computers) - and suspect that it has more robust SATA/RAID drive detection. The Hitachi Drive Fitness Test seems to work best with IDE drives - so I only use it when I don't have any Seagate disks left to use.

Seagate tools says your drive failed an important diagnostic test by problem sectors difficult to read ,now is a good time to back up your important data. How do I do this and is the hard drive shot

Prognosis is not good for the hard drive.

If you have enough room, on another disk, you can just copy the folders using Windows Explorer, but a simpler method would be to use the freebie ToDo Backup Free Backup Software for Hard Drive System Backup and Restore. Backup freeware for data backup and disaster recovery in Windows 7/XP/Vista and Linux - EASEUS.

You could then try running http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67612-check-disk-chkdsk.html, using Method 2, and running chkdsk C: /r. Afterwards, run the Seagate tool again.

your hard drive crapped out. replace before warranty expires (if you have one). the best way that id back up something on a broken hard drive is take it to some computer lab, or try to put that hard drive as slave on another computer.

Silverfox...

It looks like you and I are having somewhat the same problem. The only difference (by the sound of it) is that I have an Acer Aspire 5630 laptop, in which I just installed a 500GB Toshiba MK5055GSX hard drive...

Otherwise I'm experiencing the same problem as you are - again by the sound of your post...

The drive is new, and I checked it throughly before I installed it. I also ran Kill Disk to make sure it was totally clean after installation, then installed Vista and all the rest...

I can sure understand how frustrating this can be!

Windows just would not boot up no matter what I did...

So I join Silverfox in hoping to find a solution to this problem...

I'm going to stick my neck out here and say ... could this perhaps be a compatibility issue with Toshiba laptop hard drives and Windows Vista???

FYI...I put this same drive in a Gateway laptop - same hardware specs as my 5630, and it worked perfectly...
