Looks like a fast forward view in Doom (without the gun or the bad guys or other stuff). I don't remember that one specifically, but I'm sorry to say I too remember those days as well.

Having a laptop (and not an LCD Monitor), I no longer bother with any screensaver at all (as the problem of "burning an image into the screen" isn't an issue there. I prefer to be able to glance over from time-to-time to see changes without needing to even hit the mouse or whatever to get it to work (and most certainly without the annoyance of a password). As I have no worries at home with anyone seeing what I'm doing (or accessing my computer while I'm momentarily away - just my wife and I and no kids), that's not an issue either. And I'm not about to just leave my laptop out in the open, on or off, when in public. And if someone breaks in to sneak a peak at my computer or hack it while I'm actually home and it's on and not protected, I assure you that will soon be the least of their concerns.

Thanks for the brief trip down memory lane!

Hi all,

At work on a Windows 2k SCADA touch screen! Who says you need to update?

Correction it is WinNT SP4, not even Windows 2k! :p

that's what I think it was.

It was part of the mastercard/visa sale slip request system we used at the bank.
I used to play with the computer at work and mess it up so a computer GEEK would come buy and fix it.
I used to watch him/her for hours(even after my shift) and then follow the LAN techs around.

Could not get into IT, even after taking the classes --- A+, network+, mcse, etc

so sad my life is now without the knowledge

stay in school my friends !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In year 11 now, only hit me when I was told I won't beat my target grades of all C's. IMO, it's the school fault, the teachers see me working quiet and not kicking up a fuss and leave me to it. The school have let me down.

Ah, good old fashioned Doom... that was an amazing game for its time. I've often wondered why iD Software never recreated the original with a more advanced graphics engine. I'd be so amazing to play that game in high-res. The room designs were incredibly creative.

Ah Doom,

We had it on ALL the computers at our high school. The last few days before the summer break, pupils were allowed to choose to go out on day trips like alton towers etc, or you could stay at the school and chill out with your mates and stuff.

Suffice to say, by the end of the first day, every computer in the school, i think hundereds of us, were playing LAN games over the network. Halfway through the second day, the entire network went out.

Talk about outdated, this was back in 2002 ffs and even back then, doom was old school.

My massive wifi antenna is in the post!
We used to play it on a company network after-hours, back in 1995/1996. We then moved onto "Rise of the Triad". It must've been based on the same game engine, as the graphical structures were very similar. But the major change was a myriad of really cool weapons never seen in Doom, plus a "God mode". We used desk phones tied into a conference line to group chat. It was a blast... :)

Hi Carmine,

It sounds to me like you do have experience - it's just not the kind that can be documented or easily described in a resume - but it's possible to add it in (a good manager will recognize that kind of experience is worth considering - not the same as actually having a job doing it, but maybe enough for a starting position).

What certifications do you hold? Mine are below my name in my posts. While they alone are not sufficient for anything but perhaps a beginning systems administrator or computer technician or help desk person (assuming no other experience), there are some certifications that almost guarantee you'll be hired. For example, if you can get to a CCIE (from Cisco), you're set. Anyone with that certification is almost overqualified for just about any type of networking position (even without experience) - but then again, the final test to get it costs about $10,000 and if you fail there's a waiting period and you can try again for another $10,000. I don't mean to discourage you, but the tests up to that one are also very difficult (but all computer-based like normal certification tests - but that one is a bear. On day one they have you set up a network from scratch. That night, they go in and do everything they can to mess it up. On day two you have to fix it. If you don't set it up right or you can't fix it, you fail. But if you succeed, you are in there and will always have opportunities even without experience - THAT certification is respected above any others I know.

Plus you can include your efforts here - the fact that you are a Guru proves something. If you posted more answers to OP questions as opposed to mostly hanging out in Chillout then the value would be that much greater (as they'd probably search your most recent posts to see what they say and if the replies are good and show knowledge and expertise then that may count in your favor - and I know you can do it if you just focus on it or you wouldn't be where you already are).

Where do you live? I suppose it's a bit far for me to offer you a starter position in my company as we only do local work - but if you want to PM your resume and cover letter, I'd be happy to look them over and see if I can suggest any changes that might help (or that you hate and ignore - LOL!).

Let's see what you have to offer and then try to match it to potential jobs in the computer industry. They may be starter jobs not paying a whole lot (though I've seen some starter jobs that paid $50,000/yr plus benefits), but I'm sure there are some for which we can make you appear qualified. You may need some certs first - depends on what you have. And remember there are volunteer positions in the field which while you get no pay, you do get experience - see if you can find anything like that. This forum is an example, but I'm thinking more of direct work with computers. I once did such a thing repairing computers and teaching classes in several Office products for a non-profit and it is now part of my resume or cover letter. Of course, 20+ years owning a computer repair company doesn't hurt on my resume - but we'll find some other way to highlight your skills and abilities so that you will at least be considered. Then you need to work on how to interview properly - but that's another post for later.

If you'd like help or if there's anything I can do, just reply (here or by PM) and try to provide what I requested and I'll do what I can.

Good luck, man.
