Why does my system restart???

Hello everyone, and thanks for your help...I really hope this issue can be easily resolved.

I built my rig about three months ago and for the last month the system has been restarting randomly. It will restart at idle, if I'm in a word doc, or on the web. It will seem to freeze for two seconds, then go black and restart.
I have disabled the automatic restart to hopefully see a bsod error code, but even with the automatic restart disabled the system does not display a bsod error and still restarts.
The minidump folder is empty and the event viewer simply states that an unexpected shut down occurred.
My graphic card's avg. temp is 50c and the cpu 46c. I've ran SiSoftware Sandra stability test close to 48 hours with no errors or restarts, then the next day at idle...restart

Bios and drivers are current...I am stumped! Thanks again for your help.

Thanks Theog, I was leaning toward the PSU too, so I replaced it. The PSU was only three months old and it's kind of hard to believe that it would already be failing.

I also rerouted some of the psu's current distribution and have it plugged in straight to the wall, instead of going through a UPS.

I know a UPS is to help you shut down safely in the event of a power outage, but could it be the culprit? It is undersized for my rig, but i thought it only mattered when their was a power outage. My UPS is 540W (APC XS 900) and my PSU and monitor total 800W.

I'll just wait and see if those few things I did helped, then I'll be shopping for a more adequate UPS.

Still restarting after new PSU

So I changed the PSU yesterday and today after my rig was running for about an hour it restarted.:sa: I had Windows Live mail open as well as a firefox browser loaded to my home page of msn.com, walked away for around an hour and came back to the user sign on screen.

This is the only event logged, and only AFTER the restart (the shut down occurred at 8:20 and this log is from 8:23):

A corrected hardware error occurred.

Error Source: Corrected Machine Check

Error Type: 31981575

Processor ID Valid: Yes
Processor ID: 0x3
Bank Number: 4

Does this mean anything?

I did a bit of looking around via Google.

"Error Source: Corrected Machine Check" is the CPU encountering a problem and fixing it.

I was unable to find anything on "Error Type: 31981575", Google said 'no documents returned'. I also tried dogpile.com, as that search engine sometimes comes up with different result, but not this time.

At a guess, and that is all it is, I would check with the motherboard and cpu maker about that error type and see if they have any info on it.

This appears to be such a new error that it is highly likely only the manufacturers have encountered it.

Well JimJoe, after many minutes (more like hours) researching many possibilities, and changing the PSU (with the same one just newer) I still think the PSU is the problem and would like anyone's feed back on my thought.

I have a multiple rail Antec EA-750 (4 rail +12V) and although the Watt/amperage seems correct I have read that rigs which require high watt/amperage often shut down with no BSOD or errors logged simply due to multi-rail PSU's.

Anyone have any insight on Single rail PSU's vs. Multirail before I try a single rail PSU and see if the problem is resolved???
