Windows.old recovery

I deleted the windows.old folder. How colud I recover it? It would be very important.

If you happened to make an image backup, many of the backup softwares let you mount the image file as a drive and copy files or folders out of it.

I didnt make any backup. I installed windows 7 on my windows vista, so it made a windows.old folder. But after some time I deleted this folder. Now I need some photos, that I didn't manage to copy from the windows.old folder. Can those pictures be restored somehow?

See my post above. That should work.

I've used Shadow Explorer as whs mentioned. A nice tool to have in any case. Use it to search through all your restore points starting with the closest to the date where you did the custom install.

If Windows.old isn't there and you haven't made other backups then you're prolly out of luck.

If it was there and if you have a shadow from the time that it was still on your system, then you should find it with shadow explorer. The shadows (restore points) represent the status of the system at a certain time (when the restore point was taken). And everything that existed at that time on your system must be there.

The windows.od folder is deleted entirely, so it's not appearing in the Shadow Explorer's list.

If it's deleted an you used the system extensively since, then you're probably dead. If you left the system idle you might try one of the undelete utilities. I think it's doubtful at this point though.

You might luck out and find one or two of the files you want intact. There are some free ones around. Try free programs list on the Software forum on this site, and places like Softpedia. I'd say try this site too:

The Best Free Disk & File Software for PC

but it seems to be messed up at the moment.

It should get fixed up though. Try "best free undelete utility" when the site is working right.
